Usually school districts offer their employees short-term and long-term disability. It isn't very expensive. That would usually start to pay after the 2nd week.

Typically that's not very useful in the case of a patient getting cancer treatment such as chemo, because they need to take off sets of a few days at a time over a relatively long period. Diasbility is only going to pay if she can't work at all for an extended period of time. With US sick day allowances a few days here and a few days there soon evaporates a person's quota.

We have just received our local school district newsletter.
One of the school caretakers has been diagnosed with cancer and didn't have enough sick leave for all his treatment. The school district staff have all donated some of theirr days to him so that he can take enough time off.
The whole article was patting them on the back for their generosity, and of course they have been generous.

Why is there no mention of the underlying problem of not giving someone enough time in the first place!
That reminds me of the bit in Sicko where George W Dumbass is chatting with an old lady working 2 or 3 jobs day and night to afford her meds. Instead of saying "WTF is wrong with our country that you have to do this?", he just smiles, pats her on the back and goes "Whoo-hoo, working all hours, aint that great, theres something uniquely American about that". Yeah right.

I was going by my next-door-neighbour who had ovarian cancer. She stayed on disability all through her chemotherapy treatment. Most people can't work while undergoing the treatment because it wears you down. She never went back to work, because sadly she died. But I know she got disability all the time of the treatments.

Whilst disability and PHI can be useful in some situations they are still provided for by insurance companies and I know all too well from personal experience that they will try to weasle out and **** you over.

The answer is proper employee rights and benefits.

Thats un-American.
Go back to Europe, or whichever country you came from with your wierd accent, pale skin, bad teeth and strange bikkie-dunking-in-tea rituals when you should be out attending PTA meetings or watching QVC and holding tupperware parties or something.

Same with my mom.... she got some donated days. It's LUDICROUS. Toon's philosophy is "make money while you can then bugger off back to Holland." (And before anyone whinges about that: he moved here for my sake, not to make big money; he was 40 when he emigrated so has paid plenty into the system there.)

The dollar against the Euro isn't hot either. Property costs in the Netherlands are very high as well. Still, if it's that or be sick on the street, the appeal is immediate!

Only Toon currently has the assured option of buggering off. I'm chewing my fingernails that I make it ten more years without major problems. Nothing on the immediate horizon but that can all change in the blink of an eye.

It's not just the "I'm alright Jack" mentality that fuels the US blinkered view on humane rights for workers.... it's also the "it'll never happen to me" shit that we're supposed to grow out of as teenagers.

I've rarely claimed anything, didn't have a single cavity until I was mid-30s, but due to side effects of medication I'm at risk for periodontitis. I can't imagine waiting a year with aching bleeding gums just to get another $1k.
Thats the excellence and superior American healthcare system for you. I just paid 10k for my dental work because I had no health insurance. Same problem as you but I had to also have all of my front teeth capped in order to strengthen and save them. I have recently become eligable for health insurance at work. The dental coverage however will be limited to preventative care and emergencies. We all know how much that covers.

Yes this is unique to the US and should be a source of great shame not pride for the richest nation in the world but puddinhead George is way too stupid to know that.

Myself and the 3 children could have paid a reduced premium to join the plan but it was more than we could afford.
He had his varicose veins done there and lived like a king. I expected US hospitals to be like that as they are all privately funded. Not so near here

My mum needed a bone density scan and was in a lot of pain...on the NHS she faced an 8 month wait. I took her to the BUPA hospital, appointment whenever we wanted it. Cost 80 GBP.
They came and got her from the car and while she was being scanned they brought me a tray with a coffee press and biscuits.
Results sent there and then to her GP who was "too busy" to read them for a week!

Anyone can use a BUPA hospital but if they don't have insurance they pay full price but somethings still seem cheaper than here.

But I too have more good stories about the NHS than bad ones and I would take it anyday over this.
Wow! that is spectacular treatment for posh people.

Why do you think we are posh because my mum paid 80 pounds for treatment?
The BUPA package was part of my oh's job benefits. Do you have any benefits with your job, does that make you posh?
Why have you posted this on here where no one will see you misquoted me?
Why don't you put it on the other thread where you made the accusation about the back rubs etc?

I was using our experience of a BUPA hospital to outline why I was so disappointed with the US sysytem which for us costs more and delivers less. I wasn't bragging.
You always have plenty to say about your satisfaction with your health care here but that wouldn't be perceived as bragging by someone who didn't have any healthcare ....or would it.
