We bought an '09 Honda Pilot about a week ago. Excellent vehicle, basically an Acura MDX for $10-$15K less. Also, preemptively, yes we do need an SUV.

We also looked at the Mazda CX-9 (which is a fantastic vehicle and better looking than the Pilot... which we went with because of the dealership and the trade-in value), the Murano (also terrific, but no third row) and the VW Touareg (beautiful and the best to drive but ridiculously overpriced and, according to everything I've heard, has very dubious reliability).

If you want to go American, check out the Ford Edge and the GMC Acadia midsized SUVs. Both are pretty good. If you want a small domestic SUV, check out the current Saturn Vue. It's a rebadged Opel Antara and features genuinely European levels of interior quality and driving manners.

I'm in Iowa, too. And, I chose a Chevvy S-10 Crew Cab, which I have had since 2003. Haven't had a single thing go wrong it.

Rather buy American, than a vehicle made by a bunch of Dog-Eaters.

I want an F150, myself. But I need to get a license first, so why am I on BE when I should be studying the TX drivers manual?

Bigger than a Santa Fe? What are you doing in there?

Day to day driving its fine for my younger daughter and myself. And even if we go along as a family - we went camping last summer and it fit all the things we took, along with the monster dog that had to sit in the back seat. But, if we get visitors, I'd like a third row seat. However, I've done the minivan route, don't need, nor want that, nor do I want some huge SUV. I just want something that's a little bigger, that can haul a tent trailer (when we get one....)

So go and rent a monster when you need one. The savings in gas should pay for the rental. If you're going bigger than a Santa Fe, you're in the huge SUV market.

My Santa Fe has the 3rd row. It's been very useful with the continual stream of visitors from the UK, and in getting my daughter and her team mates to and from games. I like that I can fold the 3rd row out of the way and get everything I need in the boot for a weekends camping including huge dog (house pet, not dinner).
