Default Shopping around for a new SUV

Thinking of replacing the car I have (Hyundai Santa Fe) with a new SUV. We're test driving several, but wondering if anyone out there has a preference and why? We've test drove a Dodge Journey, it wasn't bad, but very worried about all the negative reviews. We're not necessarily buying a car right at this moment (never if it was up to my husband) but want to do research on what's out there, etc.....

If it has the words Dodge, Chrysler, Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, etc in front of it, forget it!

What's wrong with the new Santa Fe?? I had one on loan and thought it was pretty good.

I really love the new Santa Fe and wouldn't mind having it. I have a 2005 and actually like it, but I guess I just want to see what else is out there as well.

Fine -- despite the fact Chrysler owned shares.

But I'd look at Toyota, Honda, Subaru.....and Hyundai!

The Subaru Forester is a very nice car and can be had at a good price. We have a Honda Pilot. It's nice enough but a bit plain and thirsty to boot.

If you haven't already, check out the Edmunds website. Lots of useful info. The forums for any model your considering are worth looking at.

Should read: I'm bored and have nothing better to do than waste everyone's time as I'm too lazy to research cars that I'm not going to buy in the near future anyway

My Toyota Rav 4 was always very good to me. Safety and reliability trump everything else in my book though. We now have a Toyota 4 Runner. It's fine but I think I preferred the smaller Rav 4.

Put another way: Why don't you want to keep the current vehicle?

We had a Honda CR-V for 4 years, and liked it quite a bit. It was the first SUV my husband and I owned. The only reason we no longer have it is because we wanted a car with better gas mileage, and we wanted to lower our payment. And after 4 years, and high mileage, it was still worth about $3.5k more than we owed on it, so it held it's value very well.

How many seats are you looking for? I looked at the Journey as I wanted 6 seats, but the back row in the Journey was unusable...

Ended up with a Ford Freestyle (now renamed Taurus X), which has a very usable back row.... The electrics in it though are somewhat suspect, but if you're buying new with warranty then that wouldn't be a concern...

In addition to building lousy cars, Chrysler is on the verge of possibly going out of business. GM may not be far behind. Buying anything manufactured by either of them (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Chevy, Buick, Saturn, Pontiac, GMC, Cadillac, Hummer, Saab) is a crap shoot just on that basis alone.

In that class, I'd consider Toyotas, Hondas, and possibly Hyundais. Subaru wagons also offer solid, reliable alternatives. Don't forget to look at wagons; unless you need the ground clearance, they can offer most of the storage capacity of an SUV, but with better handling and higher fuel economy.

Don't buy a Land Rover...mine is 18mths old and is the only vehicle I've had problems with. I will be getting rid of it come spring.
