New York is in a prepetual state of emergency. So what else is new?

The firm had sent round e-mail Friday reminding us of their emergency number for updates on office closing and Metro-North and the City of Yonkers both have sent around their emergency preparedness emails. Guess what? I still have to go to the market today :blink::ohmy:

Just got BA to change my outward to Thursday and my return the following week by 2 days, all with no change fees - so hopefully that's me sorted then.

Just received a message from our local council saying Sandy is due to hit this area Sunday night...through Wednesday...expect power outages.

Im in central Ohio and we are expecting 40-50 miles per hour winds and potential for large dumps of sleet or snow if it bumps up against a cold front or something. And we are Justin the edge if it.

We got tanked locally by the Irene winds and Ike in 2008 too was a major wind damage fest too.

I'm hoping we do avoid the worst if this be as its Halloween and the kids will be gutted, not to mention how fat I'll get eating all the candy I won't be able to give out that night lol!

Hopefully this sucker will blow through quick, without doing too much damage. Based on what I've seen on the news, I wouldn't wait to get your emergency supplies; get 'em now. It's better to be safe than sorry even if this storm turns out to be a non-event.

I went out just before 9 am this morning, & the shelves with batteries & candles at Wal-Mart were already emptying out. It was a nightmare exiting the parking lot due to the steady stream of cars backing up onto the main road to get into the lot.

Luckily I already did my big food shopping, but now I'm worried about all those frozen things in my freezer. I've started a big pot of soup so I can just chuck thawing meats & veggies in it if necessary when/if the power fails. The husband pulled out the camping stove and lantern, so we'll at least be able to boil water & read by lantern-light.

Do people still fill up their bathtubs with water? I thought I'd do that tomorrow if the predictions are still dire....

We keep a pile of bottled water in the bottom of the deep freeze. If the power goes out, the frozen bottles help keep things cold... If it gets beyond that, we can let em thaw and drink them.

Make sure to leave some space inside so they can expand a bit when they freeze and not overflow or split. :)

Yes -- it's useful for loo flushing! Last time I carefully filled my tub, and in the morning the darn thing was empty. So I just got one of those round rubber things to put over the stopper to create a seal. I did an overnight test with a little water and it was still there this morning, so you may want to check that you don't have a slow leak you're unaware of!

One of the actually helpful tips on the Weather Channel was to fill freezer bags with water and stuff them in the gaps in your freezer. Then if the power goes out it helps keep food cold, and is another source of drinking water if the power is out for longer.

Unless you have well water...I didn't think water was a problem.
