Thanks for letting me have *my* little rant too. I snipped most of the OP since I was really just exercising my own agenda anyway
PS: no fair bringing up the poor Germans. Classic example of cultural differences.. they seem 'rude' but I'm sure it's just their 'dry sense of humor' or sumpin'.

Similar contrast with Japs when they get on TV.
Course, 'Mericuns don't get holidays so we've nothing to compare, here.

I always take my wife for that. Her Mitteleuropa genes have us right at the front in no time. I, according to my birthright, just hang my head in shame.

Re: Rude Restaurant Manners
Just a bit off track but the thing that annoys me is the way people pile up their plates from the buffet and then not eat it. I was always only put on my plate what I can eat. I had to tell the lady in the Chinese restaurant I frequent to cut down on the portions when I order a meal. She told me that she always put a lot on as she did not want to lose customers. I have not noticed too much rude manners in my neck of the woods but if I was in NY I might be singing a different tune.

Personally, I find America to be the land of extremes in many ways. Some people will say thank you for anything and everything, and some have pictures in the dictionary next to rude. Thats waht I see from the people I know - just an observation.
