Renewing U.K. passport

Renewing U.K. passport
I need to renew my passport as it has expired a year ago.
Do I get the expired passport returned as I want to keep it for application support for my green card?
If I am getting a replacement, I understand I do not need to send a birth certificate. Is this correct?

One more question.
If i am changing my name to my married name , I understand I sign the forms as my married name, but in which name do I fill the forms out?

Yes, your old passport is returned. The renewal process by mail to Washington DC has always worked smoothly and quickly for me.
