Something else I'd add... If you're currently at less-than-Masters level, you might consider getting another degree. Everyone and their dog has some kind of degree here, with the consequence that most BS/BSc-level science jobs are dead end, or likely to prove so even if advertised otherwise. A second degree in a science field need not cost anything in the US, at least in terms of $$$. But think twice about going above MS unless you're sure about your chosen subject - you'll get typecast immediately.
