Definately not the mid west, if I ever felt the need to get out of my big US car for any reason I could actually trip over the bloody places. I'm sure if everyone stopped giving them soooo much money and instead gave it to the poor there would be less poverty here.

BUT if you have it in your heart to move and you have the opportunity then go for it. As for regrets it is possible to make a mistake but the biggest regrets in life are often things you DON'T do.

I can only imagine there being several pros and cons about moving to the USA.
I am from the US and have traveled a few places outside of this great country,(to other great countries), However many of you are correct on your pros and cons.
Petty things like, our tv programs are crap to yours or car sizes are ridculus reasons. It's called adjusting.
Our health plans pretty much sucks unless you land the right job that covers those expenses. At the same time, we have some of the best doctors in the world!
Cars: well, they all get ya from point A to point B, and if they don't , no matter where you live, then it's obviously time to get a new one.
Poverty: well that's in many places all over the world. Yes America has that problem too.
Land of the Free... Yes we are free, too free to some extent sometimes, on the same note, who anywhere is really truely free 100% ? No one!
America has some great oportunity's , no doubt! I have a feeling there is the same chances for that elsewhere in the world also. It depends on the individual, you progress in life by how hard you work to reach those goals you set for yourself.
I would never sit here and say we are better then anywhere else. Your home is your home, it's all what you make of it, no matter where you are. The best place to be is where you are surrounded by love and are happy! It could be on an island in the middle of nowhere if need be, as long as you have love, and the desire to to wake up and make it an appoint to make your life better. After all, you only get 1 chance to do it !
I have a funny feeling there is some Americans that have moved to the UK and other parts of the world that feel the same way some of you feel over here. Food sucks, or isn't as good, tv is crap, not the same sense of humor, blah blah blah.....You made the move and now you're out of your comfort zone. It's called Risk and New Experiences. Isn't it a wonderful thing that we have the chance to try new things? Life is all what you make of it. Find love, stay in touch with family and friends, make new ones, respect everyone , of every race of every country and the world will be a better place where ever you live. Lot's of luck and happiness to the original poster.

and thanks for every posting. it is interesting to know what was the motivation behind your emmigration.
of course, size of cars is not a reason to move. this was a stupid statement from my side. What I don`t like here is that they try to make you feel guilty if you drive e.g. a SUV.
It is difficult to explain what is exactly my reason to move to the USA. I wrote "the american way of life" as a summary of all reasons.
-to cruise on a american highway is different than to race on a german autobahn
-shopping is differnet in the USA. big malls, more products, better service.
-drive in ATMs
-in general houses are bigger -.....- cheaper
- etc.
a lot of little things that I consider as better in the US. Some will again say that to cruise on a highway is a ridiculus reason to move. but it is the total of all reasons (the list is much much longer). and this little things from daily life increase the qualitiy of life.
Nick How can you not be happy in Germany? I loved that place!
in spite of, I dont` see my future here in Germany because of job-opportunities and taxes. That`s sheer madness, what you pay taxes.
nice weekend to everyone !!!!!!!!

[QUOTE=Nick01]Hi everyone
I`m interested in your reasons to move to the US. Why did you emmigrate to the US ?
QUOTE]
I haven’t got there yet( H-1b interview on Tuesday) gonna be the big no or yay.
This my 2nd opportunity to go work in the US and I’m taking it. So I don’t have the regret of not having tried it. In my mind I know we can come back after a few years.
My reasons are similar to USbound, the industry in the UK is going though a bad patch also financially, I’d be better off in the US.
In addition, I love ‘idea of’ US Culture, lifestyle, the landscape itself. This picture is made up from films/media and actual visits and I’m sure will be re-drawn once we have spent a few year there. The lack of family contact is my only concern.

e.g. "quality" of TV and other media
e.g. cost vs quality of food and the impact on the population's health
e.g. discrimination and lack of knowledge about other nations, ethnicities, religions and people who are not heterosexual. Particularly true about Black Americans, Latinos and Muslims.
Admiration or love of the "American way of life" will probably not be of practical help to you to move to the States nor cope with living in the country once you get here. Ignore this if you are at least a millionnaire.

-I don`t know the TV - programs in the US. BBC is a very good news channel, sometimes I lissen to BBC-Radio by the internet. But quality of TV here in Germany is catastrophic.
Anyway what I watch are (1)news-programs or (2)sit-coms (Seinfeld, friends, sex and the city, alf). other things I don`t watch ..... so both must be available in the US.
-population`s health: difference between UK and US are not crucial: life expectany for males in 2001 in UK is 75.7 in US 74.4 http://www.google.de/search?q=cache:...ung+oecd&hl=de
oecd-stats.
so what the American way of life has to do with population`s health?
-discrimination is not only an american problem. The USA is a melting pot and imigrants who are ready and make an effort for integration are welcome.
e.g. my english is awful, in spite of people were very friendly to me ....
here in germany, turkish people who speak german with a strong accent are automatically people of second class .....
So this has also nothing to do with the American way of life.
-pollution is a big problem in the US , in this point I agree with you, this is also a result of the American way of life.
-lack of employment for Americans ...... Shall I poste the unemployment rate for germany ?
again: I cant see the connection between lack of employment and the American way of life.

so this are rather "exogenous" reasons. But there must be some people who moved to the US because:
- I love the american way of life
- it is the land of the free
- weather is better than where I have been living before
- opportunities for my family / children are better in the US than in Europe

Stay out of the bible belt (the South). Most states up North have a reduced number of CCs although you'll still get them.

You have listed a bunch of reasons why somebody might want to emigrate the US, but all of the second part of your list doesn't make a fig's worth of difference when it comes to obtaining a visa. It seems that, from reading the posts in the past, most of us are here with American spouses, and most of the rest because their employer obtained a visa for them.

I do miss the Beer, despite the best efforts of the local Brewpubs.
We came here 'mainly' because my Wife's daughter became pregnant, I had no real ties to the UK and I fancied a change. We shall probably move back some time.
I have relations over at the moment and listening to them reminds me of all the things I did not like about the way the UK was going - but then I lived in London.
As has been said for the most it is not better or worse, just differant.
I have yet to come across the Religous Right face to face, so add Colorado to the list of areas not seriously infected.
