Quickest Way to get a SSN
#16
DH applied in person the day after he received his EAD in the mail but he wasn't in the system yet. However, he didn't have to go back. We received a notice 3 or 4 days later saying that everything was in order and a week later he had his SS card.

I was there getting a new card after I got married last summer and there was a gal in there trying to get a replacement card without any proof of who she was. She was from FL and this was OH. She had nothing but a checkbook with her name on it and they wouldn't accept it....she was getting hostile, so the officer just stood up & walked over close to her. She quickly calmed down, and headed out the door.

Hi All
I am flying out next Monday to start my 2 year expat in the US. There are a couple of things (most importantly my car lease) which will be pending a Social Security Number. I understand the normal process is to wait 10-14 days after arriving in the US before applying for a SSN and it can then take a further 2 weeks before my card will arrive (assuming no problems). I have also been told that I could go back to my local SS office the day after applying and they will print out some piece of paper with my number on it.
Am hoping for some helpful hints, tips or other experiences that will enable me to get my SSN ASAP.
Many thanks for any advice.

We just applied for Keith's SSN.
The deal is - even though when you arrive you are in the immigration systems computers, it takes 10 days to get into social security's system.
So if you apply before the 10 days, what happens is that the soc sec office holds the application, and then at the end of the 10 days checks to see if you are in the system.
If you are, they process the application, and ours said the card should take about 2 weeks.
If you are not in the system after those 10 days, they have to contact USCIS and confirm.
Personally, I would recommend waiting the 10 days, because otherwise you are trusting the soc sec office to hold the application and remember to go back and submit it.

I arrived in the US on Monday 2/25. Went to SSA to apply for the number Monday 3/10. Went back the next day and got a printout with my number on it. Card arrived in the mail today 3/17. Pretty impressed actually - they said min 10 days but it was only 5 business days.

We arrived here on sat 8th march, went to SS office on Fri 14th. We waited for about 2 hours, then we were not on the system but the guy put all the details in and said it would be processed when immigration updated it - we dont have to go back. He said it can take 4-6 weeks to come through, and gave us a receipt which says we have applied but does not give you the actual number.

If you need the actual number, they are issued overnight so you should be able to go back and get a printout telling you the number.
Or to save a trip, you can call and check if the number has been issued.

Hit some poor guy over the head and steal his wallet ! ... It should come complete with SS card and other forms of ID.
