Question about Background Checks etc
I apologise if I am repeating a question anyone has already asked but I have had a look and can't find anything, wondering if anyone can help me out on this question...
As I think I mentioned before, I got divorced a couple of years ago and my ex as far as I know is now bankrupt. We had some debt problems, anything that was in my sole name I have dealt with and now have a mortgage in my own name etc. However, we had a couple of accounts that were joint names that I stupidly agreed to let him deal with when we first split - and he assured me he was making payments and I trusted him, we then got a "quickie" divorce so nothing was hammered out with regard to finances - it was all just sorted out between us.
Anyway, I found out much later after I sent off to credit agencies for my file that there was a CCJ against us on one of the accounts - I didn't know anything about it cos the correspondence had been going to my old address and obviously he had kept it from me. So, long story short the CCJ is unsatisfied and is going to be on my credit file from my previous (married) surname.
I had to fill out the DS156 for my embassy interview next week and they asked for my spouse's name - even if divorced and I am worried sick if this unsatisifed CCJ is going to affect me getting my visa. In total honesty I never contacted the company even after I found out about it - I never ran up the debt and didn't see why I should pay it - and of course by then they had no way of contacting me - but no doubt still contact him about it - not sure because I have no contact with him.
Anyway - I guess what I am asking is, will an outstanding CCJ affect my chances of getting the visa next week.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Debts, unless a result of fraud, are civil not criminal matters. You should have no problem with a CCJ against your ex-spouse.

Hell my ex was convicted of stealing 18K from the DSS, but I still got in.

Thanks for clarifying - the CCJ is against both of us tho. :-( I guess what I am wondering is - would non payment of a debt be classed as fraud (it's for £790 I think).
