When I take a trip back home, usually in the summer, I always stock up on pj's for the kids.

Anyone who pays full price at Old Navy, JCP, Kohl's, etc. is a mug. Our junk mail is perpetually full of 20%-50% discounts for those and similar stores. When Mrs P buys clothes for little Miss P at Kohl's she is always given more coupons for the next week. On one occasion Mrs P didn't have the coupon for that day, and when the sales assistant asked if she had one, the sales assistant said, "Never mind, I'll take 20% off for you.".
Thinking about it, the competition for Primark is going to be the dollar stores, and places like Magic Mart and Ollies (which are local/regional), but I'm sure everywhere has trashy discount stores, don't they?

Marks and Spencer owned a handful of upmarket supermarkets in New Jersey....Kings Supermarkets. They sold some Marks and Spencer dry and seasonal goods. M&S sold the stores about 8 years ago.
They also owned Brooks Brothers clothing stores...they sold the stores around 12 years ago.

We recently went to Bermuda on holiday and were delighted to find an M&S there. Missus stocked up on knickers and we got some other clothes and sweets from the food section. We remarked to one of the staff about how sad we are that there are no Marks in North America proper and she told us that they're planning to return to Canada next year.

Of course, the difference may be more that I was shopping in their Oxford Street stores, where the clientele is a mixture of teenagers, young professionals and Arabic tourists.
