Looks that way with some of the prices being quoted here!

$1.99 at Costco in San Jose but premium is $2.40. Valero station near me is $2.28 but premium is $2.48.

With my Discover 5% cashback on gas stations this quarter, premium is cheaper at the Valero station than at Costco.

At the ARCO station that had $1.99 for regular, had the mid grade 30 Cents higher at $2.29.

Good to see that the west coast is now catching up.

Down to $1.91 at the 7/11 on my way into work now. It was $1.92 when I first moved here. Oh, the nostalgia.

Now, I have a vague recollection some time between 2007 and 2009, that it dropped down, albeit briefly, to below $1.75 round our way. Might even have been down to $1.50, if I remember correctly. Wonder if we'll see that again?

Prices have stayed the same this week ($1.95 being the cheapest CC and $1.89 for cash). It's the longest time it hasn't dropped since all this started.

It worries me a little.

It'll probably come back down again shortly. Ours went from $1.94 back up to $2.21 for about a week or so and now it's down to $1.91. I can't make head nor tail of it

It shouldn't because strange things are going on with relative prices in different "markets". ..... For most of the last quarter of 2014 the price of gas in the town nearest to my home was about 15c more than the next town (my current gas station of choice). Another area I frequent was about 20c more, but when I took a trip (in a direction I rarely travel)I discovered another town where gas was about 10c cheaper than my gas station of choice. Then I noticed, and noted above, that around Christmas the price movements in my area had stalled, but on a trip in the New Year to the +20c area, I found prices had fallen markedly during the two weeks while I was away, and were only around +5c to my gas station of choice. ..... Meanwhile the area that was -10c, is now +10c.

In truth these variations have always existed with periods of months or years when gas of the same brand is cheaper or more expensive than other nearby towns. Since I came here 12 years ago I have always kept an eye on prices and bought where gas is chespest. Sometimes it is near my home, sometimes near my office, and sometimes in between. .... When a major textile mill went bust and shut down, taking that town's economy into the toilet, the price of gas was lower there than other towns for several years.

It's slowly getting there, $2.04 this morning. That magic psychological moment of sub $2 a gallon is getting closer. I have no idea why the independent gas station down the road is still at $2.34, and even more of a mystery is why there were several people filling up there.

They are probably setting their prices based on what they paid for their stock of fuel. So they paid, say $2.13 and mark it up 10%. The owner obviously doesn't understand economics, nor does he recognize that while his sales have slowed to a crawl if he had sold his expensive gas at a notional loss but quickly, he could now have bought in cheaper gas and be selling it at a profit. Why people are buying there is more of a mystery though, some combination of laziness and habit I'd guess.
