I love BE!
As always, it comes down to the War of 1812. I've been banging on about the War of 1812 since the 1970s. For decades, I just got puzzled looks in response. Now I live within spitting distance of Cryslers Farm, Ogdensburg, Plattsburgh and Sacketts Harbor, plus the bicentenary, I'm like a pig in shit!!

As I recall it's at a fixed exchange rate though, so same thing basically.

Make any sense? What do you guys do?

Thanks
One should chose to be respectful when appropriate. but in my opinion its downright disrespectful for members of a parent teacher association to have a pledge at the start of a meeting. I'd sit and motion to have it stopped. Then I live in Seattle and would not be ostracized.

My 11yr old was asking me about this the other day. I attended an international school in Venezuela (95%+ US students/teachers) and we said the pledge every day. I didn't really think about it, it became rote to me - 30 years later I can still do it! My younger sister, however refused to take part.

I've told my kids that when we move out there, they should stand respectfully if it happens. Is it still a daily occurance in schools?

In schools it seems to vary. Still common in many from anecdote, but the two schools I know well - one does it weekly the other never.

In my neck of the woods many people think everyone west of the Rockies should be ostracized.

I am a citizen now, but I have never had a problem with it. ...... HH will probably be along shortly to admonish us.

That said, the occasions I have been present when the pledge has been recited have been very few.

I guess if you want to live here and love everything America does (and has done throughout its history), fine. I appreciate that viewpoint.

Myself, I am here because my wife and job are. If the UK stopped putting people in prison for having an opinion, I'd be looking to relocate us after I gain US citizenship (again, purely to ensure I can always be with my wife).

my kids say it daily at school, and also at the cub scout pack they attend. I help run the pack and felt it was least awkward to just go along with it. I intend to be a citizen, i respect the country, so where is the harm? its not like i am defaming anything else by doing it?

The cub scouts actually had a Flag retirement ceremony recently and it was really moving - regardless of the fact it isn't the country of my birth. I can still respect it and appreciate the depth of emotion felt by the others.

I would have a real issue with my kids (when they pop out!) reciting the pledge. It's American brain washing.
