However, what brain-dead parent allows a child to take a knife to school. I don't care whether it's a steak knife or a pen knife or a Stanley knife or whatever.
The girl probably was sensible, but who knows in whose hands the knife might have fallen once word got around that she had it on her. Just some other kids fooling around with it, without evil intentions, could have led to injury.
Bottom line is, sharp knives have no place in schools.

I agree the school went completely overboard by reporting the incident to the police. And the police are stupid to charge her.

Come on! This is an elementary school, not Lord of the Flies! The kid had probably been using a steakknife at home for years and her parents thought nothing of it. I sure as hell wouldn't have dreamed of the scenario in the OP.
