Depending on where you are wachovia also open an account with no ssn

Most banks will, SSN isn't a requirement to opening an account, just identifiable identification like a passport.
Speak to someone senior who'll know how to do it. At a pinch if their systems do require a number, 000-00-0007 is the generic number for foreigners without a number that the bank can use.

They certainly will, although navigating through their computer system to get to the right place to be able to enter your proof of i/d can be challenging as I discovered earlier this year ...

That's a pain, I guess I was lucky, I got my SSN they day after I arrived in the States, I guess my high priced lawer had his uses
