i meant I saw signs on the mailboxes outside peoples homes - not a blue usps one. I have only seen a few blue ones - as i use my own mailbox to get stuff posted as mentioned above (or take it to the post office if i am unsure).

I know that's what you were talking about, but Mr. F's post got me thinking. What he was on about is that it's actually illegal to place material with no postage into a mailbox (18 USC 1725). I'd forgotten about that when I answered your original post. That's why often there are separate boxes for newspapers. So the stickers must be a signal to pull into the driveway.

Edit... by "mailbox" I mean the delivery mailbox at your house. "Customer mail receptacle" in USPS-speak.

A lot of the blue USPS drop boxes were removed after 9/11. The ones that are still in use have a weight restriction of what you can drop into it.
