Default Odd little signs

Ive been meaning to ask this for weeks but keep forgetting.

I keep seeing on mailboxes little round/oval signs. They containe the letter D in a kind of gothiky script and are either plain white or half white and half orange (split vertically). What on earth does it mean? Is it just an Ohio thing?

It's a Columbus, Ohio thing. It's from the script letterhead of the Columbus Dispatch. A signal to the delivery people to put a paper in that mailbox.

I should add that the "D" symbol is a Columbus area thing. Other places in the US use a similar system to identify subscribers of particular newspapers.

We have the best signs on the parkway here in Pittsburgh - "report aggressive drivers". To whom? LOL.

We have a sign that says "Accident Reduction Zone"! Of course there's an accident directly in front of it several times a week...

Sounds like they need to extend the zone a few feet then!

I think everyone is reading the enormous sign instead of watching the road.

Hi:

Is it to put it in the actual mailbox? Somehow I thought that is illegal. What I have seen in California outside of the big cities are plastic boxes attached to the mail box with the logo or name of the newspaper thereon.

That's a good question. Separate boxes for newspapers also are common in Ohio, esp. as you've noted, away from the larger cities. We don't have a curbside mailbox, and our papers are dropped on our front stoop. Perhaps the stickers are an indicator that the deliverer needs to pull into the driveway and drop off a paper. You could be right that only USPS is authorized to place anything into a mailbox... I have no idea how vigorously they defend that turf.

You mean the blue USPS mailboxes? I've noticed it too, I think they're disappearing! I swear there used to be more of them around.

our mail is picked up from the house/mailbox...unless i have to get it weighed and take a trip to the post office. i think it's common over here to have your mail collected from the home mailbox, maybe check it out for your area.
