I did all my studies at home in Oz, so I've only ever worked in US universities.

I can only guess how overwhelming the undergrad recruitment process is here. On the plus side, it sounds like she will have options, so the choice may come down to lifestyle more than anything else. Honestly, I think a student engaging with the subject matter is more important than any bells or whistles, so if she's committed to her studies, I don't think there's really any such thing as the wrong choice (finances being equal, of course).

I'd just take pains to sort out whether popular/learned opinion relates to undergrad or grad programs - no point doing your Bachelor's somewhere on the basis of their PhD program.

Can you imagine the disappointment when you said Abu Dhabi instead

Thanks for your help Retzie.
She did a summer math camp at Bryn Mawr (Mathily) which she absolutely loved and the teachers there gave her the low-down on various college math departments.
We live in Austin and it appears that she will be offered a place on their CS Honors program (Turing Scholar) which she probably won't take up since she wants to live away from home.

Pulaski had it almost right about us moving here...we decided to leave France and the US was one option for us, the excellent math and CS programs here played a big part in persuading our teenage daughter to leave France and all her friends. As an international student from EU we wouldn't have been able to finance her studies here even had she managed to get one of the very few places available for international students. As an LPR she was in with a chance at least.

When I first posted on the forum I was very angry about the way the school district refused to give her any credit for her studies in France. At that point, she was at a big disadvantage for entry to a good college. However, since then, she has worked hard, got excellent results and should have a few offers from excellent colleges to choose from.

Ha, isn't that the way? UT Austin has a phenomenal math department (at the research level anyway).

It's still way off, but just in case there is any discussion of grad school: the thing about math is that you are usually well into college before you even get an idea of which field you want to pursue. Then, no one department specialises in everything, so you edit down to the schools that have people in your chosen area. The moral being there is no real point trying to figure it out right now (I know that was/is the sort of thing I'd worry about).

Also, I'm not sure, but I suspect CS is more aggressive in recruiting female majors than math. (Well, math isn't aggressive at all, so really any token effort would win there.) There is a tendency for CS majors to let their math slide, so if she can keep up both, she'll be in good shape. (To win outright, she'd do stats as well.)

I'm glad to hear she's turned it around! It's amazing the lengths to which some people will go to put off bright students...
