The Holocaus in Germany stands out as well as all the burning of bodies during Franco's reign of terror in Spain.Do you think America's horrible history involving slavery is worse than Europe's history in the Balkins,Nazi Germany and all the other horrors of its past? In my opinion its scary that in 2007 we are still talking about Nooses in the United States.

The noose is symbolic of a lot of different periods of history all over the world. In Texas you can still be hanged for cattle rustling (at least on the books) but not for being black. If you are sincerely interested in the history and the symbolism of the noose in the US - why don't you do some studying and research instead of asking a forum full of relatively recent immigrants who have no point of reference on this subject?

Does that put all southern Americans with a large hanging post in their back yard? Not hardly. What garbage are you reading or watching?

Do you really believe the traditional south is a safe haven of human rights for all Americans? How many years have you lived in the South?Let me say, I would not consider living in certain states in America just like I wouldn't feel safe in some areas of Austria or Germany to name a few.My family's history goes back well over 300 years in America.I like to think I know a few things about this country

Racism is a real and concerning part of life in the US. Perhaps you could find more interest in your topics if you actually discussed the day to day reality of life for minorities in this country and left off with all of the drama.

I don't know what brought this up for you today, but it was a local topic of discussion out here on the other coast (far from the South).

The print column:
Overreaction? No, the pain is too deep

On Oct. 21, three black women from Portland who were driving in Vancouver looking for property stumbled upon what looked like an effigy on a backyard tree. They e-mailed digital pictures to a mutual friend, Diana McKnight, who lives in that upscale neighborhood.

"It looks like a real black man hanging," one of the women wrote.

The homeowner insisted the display was harmless but removed the bushy Afro wig after being questioned by television reporters.

"It was obvious," McKnight says, "that it was more than just a joke."

Thursday, a special CNN report tried to explain how much emotional baggage is attached to the noose, which was used at various times to kill witches, criminals and cattle rustlers. It's one of the Tarot cards that signals a bad omen. A completed stick-figure drawing means you've lost the game of hangman.

But many blacks tend to have an especially emotionally charged reaction to this grim symbol of once-acceptable American terrorism.

---

A tied-up piece of rope twisted into a noose is just one of those symbols that incites fear, intimidation or anger. And its trigger point encases the worst that blacks and whites could feel about each other.

I've lived in different regions of America.Lived in Jersey well over a decade found the place to be very progressive have been in florida now nearly 2 years.I was not born in the south but was raised in North Carolina and had spent allmost 10 years in Alabama as an adult.Trust me when I say the traditional south is a whole different mentality and struggle greatly with human evolution.I know a few brits who compare southern states to regions in the northern UK.They say neither is progressive.

1. The traditional south isn't the norm now a days is it? 2. I have lived here for my entire life. What were you hoping for a non American? 3. If you wouldn't feel safe then don't move there! Pretty simple aye? 4. The majority of my family were poor arse immigrants who happened to the south after the potato famine and often worked and lived on someone elses farm. White slaves....my grandfather was so proud of the photo of him and 2 of his siblings perched atop a mule. He told us, "we were so poor the man my daddy worked for loaned us his mules for our garden. Daddy would do the mans farming first and then was allowed to borrow the mules for his own crops."

If anything I consider myself the norm, because my family ended up in a foreign land working like dogs to make someone else a buck. I am proud of that. Far to many Americans want to dwell on their own family history. Yes it is nice to know, but it is what it is ...... the past. Keep stirring the pot, whichever side you think you are on, and racism will never truly go away.
