Re: New York City hotels...any good tips...
we'll be going to NY in August...first time and we'll be doing the whole touristy bit with 3 kids...I am sure it will be fun...
anybody knows a nice hotel that is conveniently located, doesn't have to be a chain type hotel...
I know I can google and there will be loads coming up, but I am hoping one of you can actually recommend from experience...

Just remembered another place - I walk past it all the time!
It's the 'family-friendly' Novotel in Times Square. Novotels are French-owned and we stayed in one at Charles-De-Gaulle airport with our kids a few years ago...the rooms were huge! Also at the Novotel on the A4 in Hammersmith after just flying in from New Delhi, again a very spacious room indeed.
They're having a Family promotion on right now (not sure how many kids will be with you?):

I'm heading there this weekend. Renaissance Hotel 57 - just a block or two from Central park. Taking a picnic rug...

We're going in August too but I'm not sure where we are staying this time... but last time we stayed at Hotel Chandler which was lovely and only one block away from the Empire State (where I, very cheesily, popped the question).
I think the price was pretty reasonable and it was very clean and fairly spacious for the location.

Have been twice. First time was an absolute birthday blowout in the Ritz Carlton Battery Park. It was unbelievable. Our room had a telescope to view the statue of liberty. Very trendy bar (they actually tried to turn us away until they realised we were staying there and then their attitude promptly changed). Rooms great, log fire effect tv, bubble bath guide in bathroom.
Next time was cheaper and near south street seaport. Sorry, can't remember name but it wasn't a chain and was very reasonable priced. I was a bit disappointed when I checked in as there was a whir from the airconditioning units outside and no bath plug, but turned out to be really good. Slept better because of the whir I think!
I always use tripadvisor and can recommend it. Have a lovely holiday.

My favorite hotel in London is like that, the Royal Horse Guards. I've had a lovely junior suite with a view of the air conditioning unit, OR a tiny room with a miniscule balcony overlooking the Thames.

At the "Tribeca Grand" you can get "complimentary pet goldfish upon request"

There's been a lot about bed bugs in NYC on TV in the past week or so. Seems it's a growing problem affecting more and more hotels...inspect mattresses and don't put clothes in drawers.

And clothes shops too! When I was there at the weekend saw news reports about a Hollister and two American Eagles or something closed because of bed bug infestation!!!

I would second Englishmum on Embassy Suites. They're not flash, but work well with children with large (divided) rooms.
When you don't have children, I would always use The Library in Midtown. http://www.libraryhotel.com/
