Default A new gadget - not for America :)

I read this in todays Mail.... No prizes for guessing why it will not be any good on this side of the pond

Charge your mobile by walking
------------------------------
By Julie Wheldon Science Correspondent

A RUCKSACK which generates energy as you walk could one day power iPods and mobile phones.
Scientists have invented a backpack which creates electricity from the movement of walking.
They say the bag eliminates the need to carry spare batteries or charge up equipment before setting off on a journey. In tests, a backpack weighing 3st to 6st was found to generate 7.4 watts.
As a mobile phone needs only 1 watt, it is thought a rucksack weighing 5lb could create enough energy to keep it charged. The prototype of the suspended-load backpack, outlined today in the journal Science, was made by Professor Larry Rome, who works in the biology department at the University of Pennsylvania.

For an American version how about a model that generates power from your jaw as you chew burgers and donuts?

Yes, great for supplying power when no mains socket is available, but I'd sooner pay 25¢ (and I'm guessing that recharging my phone costs a good bit less than that? ) than carry a weight equivalent to two bags of sugar around with me.

I wonder if it would be possible to harness the energy wasted by British people as they stand outside the pub on their 15 minute break and down 3 pints?

Come on, people. Remember, for every negative stereotype about the US there exists an equally repellant one about the UK.

Only 15 minute breaks?, things have changed.

Not sure how much energy it takes to down a pint, but 25% more than a US one.
