I was going to take my fried laptop to UK next week as my dad thinks he can fix it. Maybe not, even in checked bag?

It's a common way to check electrical items. The difference is whereas it was upto the guard to decide whether the device needed further investigation, now it seems the yanks have made it compulsory.

I flew from LHR to SFO on Wednesday and got though security in under 3 minutes (schools weren't out yet so it was fairly quiet which was lucky as arrived at the airport only 90 mins before my flight). Didn't turn on a single device. Didn't notice anything different.

Most likely another attempt to distract people from (at that time) the pending terrorism unleashed on Gaza which we have now seen. The same was done by warlord Blair a few years back with the farcical liquid threat during the Lebanon conflict.
