Re: Need your support and some thoughts
Hiya Kida :) First of all, a very warm welcome to British Expats. :) We're a bit of a nutso bunch, but friendly.
I'm in the Chicago area (far-western suburbs) but am emigrating in about 4 weeks' time so am not much help as far as socialising with you. However, you might do worse than to hook up with the meetup.com group. The next meetup is a week from Friday - go join them! :) I've been to a couple of meetups that we had out in the 'burbs and it was great getting together with other expats. It really does help ease the pain of homesickness. :) |

Re: Need your support and some thoughts
I'm not homesick and I don't think I have been...but I did go through a time where moving to America was the reason for all my problems....which it was not....I could of had them anywhere.......it must be a stage you go thought...because I know a lot of people who have had the same feelings ....

I'm very optimistic person usually, but last 4 months I've been rather unhappy with no visible reason for it rather than..homesickness.. I live in a beautiful place, have a great OH,have a job, but every morning i'm trying to pull myself out of the bed and wonder where the old myself go? I feel guilty because the saying "home is where you heart" isn't really working on me.My heart-my husb is here but still i feel so out of place.:curse: Does anyone have the same feeling of guilt when u have ur perfect life here and it doesn't make you happy? Sorry i don't know if it makes any sense |

Your suffering from the 1st year blues. This does go away eventually - my wife and i have lived in USA for 3 years now (Im 31 shes 29). We still miss home but last time we visited for a holiday we realised that we could never have what we have here in the UK and boy how everything looked soooooooooo small!!
My parents are dead and I have no connection with any other relatives, but there is absolutely no way I would ever consider living here forever, and I know I am not alone. So you have a huge house and big car.......... so what... |

Re: Need your support and some thoughts
I guess I'm in the minority, then. I moved to the USA from Canada 14 years ago. Never had the slightest bit of homesickness, and am utterly uninterested in moving back. The USA is my home now.

Re: Need your support and some thoughts
Maybe it's the "across the ocean" thing that scares me. And also i noticed that i miss old european stuff which i thought was boring before:)

I went home not long ago, hoped that i would immediately miss US, but nope everything felt familiar and mine. I was even ok with the negatives because i didn't expect them to change. What I really hoped is that coming back here i will look at everything with different eyes.Well i did and i didn't. Funny never knew i've been so attached to my previous life/home. Here's a HUGE HUG for you :) |

Here's a HUGE HUG for you :) Having a baby is a serious move i understand that if i feel now like this no one can guarantee that after having a kid the PMD will layer on what i feel now. Hopefully it wont take too long.. BE rules btw. Guys, you made my day!!! |

where in Chicago are you?
Have you thought of getting a job within an office... pump up your social life a little (hopefully). Also - what kind of graphic design? |

Felt just like you to begin with, eased up after about 18mth, 2 yrs now I get odd bad days, even my husband does and he likes it here - it's kind of an irrational thing, as others have said it's to do with the realisation of permanence perhaps. |

I go to the office to work and have normal working day like everyone, but sometimes i can get a week off because of the lack of projects. So it's pretty convenient way to work. I do a lot of web design, and print (packaging, promo materials etc) My OH understands and helps as much as he can, but sometimes like today i'm so terribly missing home it hurts..I know it takes time, but i'm so impatient when it comes to my own issues. |

I've been honestly doing great for some time, even thought i'm settled and became myself;) But having really strange week lately..same stuff happens again with my head. can't sleep, can't live normal life, feel like crying.. The question is it normal? This is my 19th month here, how long does it take to become adequate again? |

You can get through it. One day you'll look back on this time and wonder why you were so unhappy. In the meantime, perhaps you can go and talk to your doctor? I'm not a fan of medication of any sort, but if your depression is long-lasting and debilitating, as it seems to be, some mild antidepressants might be just what you need to kick-start the positive side of your outlook on life again. |

And here you were, my sister, Dolores, all this time and I never knew it. Can't possibly be two women in NJ without kitchens in their next house. |

How long did it take you guys to feel good and happy in the new country? Hi Kida ... welcome to the BE stomping grounds. You never said where in the big old US you are. Perhaps there might be BE members in your area or a British club that you can join and at the very least be with those familiar with your background ;-) Do you work? What interests do you have outside the house? Have you thought of going back to school, taking classes, whatever? Homesickness must be horrible to suffer through. I don't know first hand but from reading on BE I know that others either give in the feelings of loneliness, isolation and despair or they pull up their stocks and venture out in public and make a life for themselves. They still are homesick but at least they are busy which takes some of the cutting edge off of the emotion. Hugs Rete |
