Hiya Kida :) First of all, a very warm welcome to British Expats. :) We're a bit of a nutso bunch, but friendly.

I'm in the Chicago area (far-western suburbs) but am emigrating in about 4 weeks' time so am not much help as far as socialising with you. However, you might do worse than to hook up with the meetup.com group. The next meetup is a week from Friday - go join them! :) I've been to a couple of meetups that we had out in the 'burbs and it was great getting together with other expats. It really does help ease the pain of homesickness. :)

I'm not homesick and I don't think I have been...but I did go through a time where moving to America was the reason for all my problems....which it was not....I could of had them anywhere.......it must be a stage you go thought...because I know a lot of people who have had the same feelings ....

It does??? How can you say that so categorically?

My parents are dead and I have no connection with any other relatives, but there is absolutely no way I would ever consider living here forever, and I know I am not alone.

So you have a huge house and big car.......... so what...

this is what is doing my head in, if i move back to the states i keep thinking it might as well be forever or whats the point going through all the heart ache moving etc, but then again, i don't think i could stay there forever, mind you i'm not that keen on the UK as i'm back again and not happy here (again), i think, not where i live anyway.

I guess I'm in the minority, then. I moved to the USA from Canada 14 years ago. Never had the slightest bit of homesickness, and am utterly uninterested in moving back. The USA is my home now.

good for you bill, it's comforting to know you're home and for you it's the usa. for me it's england and i am so glad i know where home is because for the peeps that don't know and can't settle it's very distressing.

everything felt familiar and mine.
I was even ok with the negatives because i didn't expect them to change.
What I really hoped is that coming back here i will look at everything with different eyes.Well i did and i didn't.
Funny never knew i've been so attached to my previous life/home.

Oh you poor thing. I have had my ups and downs, some years I feel settled, other years I want to run back to mommy. I'm with whomever said don't have kids until you feel somewhat settled :)

Here's a HUGE HUG for you :)

Thank you!
Having a baby is a serious move i understand that if i feel now like this no one can guarantee that after having a kid the PMD will layer on what i feel now.
Hopefully it wont take too long..

BE rules btw. Guys, you made my day!!!

where in Chicago are you?

Have you thought of getting a job within an office... pump up your social life a little (hopefully).

Also - what kind of graphic design?

Have you got any British friends? Is your OH understanding?

Felt just like you to begin with, eased up after about 18mth, 2 yrs now I get odd bad days, even my husband does and he likes it here - it's kind of an irrational thing, as others have said it's to do with the realisation of permanence perhaps.

I live in the Lincoln park area.V nice place, 10 mins to the lake.
I go to the office to work and have normal working day like everyone, but
sometimes i can get a week off because of the lack of projects. So it's pretty convenient way to work.
I do a lot of web design, and print (packaging, promo materials etc)

My OH understands and helps as much as he can, but sometimes like today
i'm so terribly missing home it hurts..I know it takes time, but i'm so impatient when it comes to my own issues.

We've been here just over 5 years now.

...and we're just starting to feel like we may be over the whole culture-shock thing, which often manifested itself as the kind of depression that you're experiencing now.

You can get through it. One day you'll look back on this time and wonder why you were so unhappy.

In the meantime, perhaps you can go and talk to your doctor? I'm not a fan of medication of any sort, but if your depression is long-lasting and debilitating, as it seems to be, some mild antidepressants might be just what you need to kick-start the positive side of your outlook on life again.

There's a thread about anti-depressants in the MBTTUK forum which the OP may find interesting. Also search the MBTTUK forums for St John's Wort.

If you feel depression continuously for 2 weeks, then go and visit your doctor. If you have irrational thoughts, fears, anxiety, harmful or suicidal thoughts, visit your doctor now.
Sometimes people get depression and it passes, sometimes it doesn't pass without help.
Good luck.

I would try herbal remedies first....the thought of prescription anti depressant meds scares the hell out of me.

I've written about my experience with depression in the MBTTUK forum many times...I found SJW really helped me and still does from time to time. I've been here 12 years.

Hi Kida ... welcome to the BE stomping grounds. You never said where in the big old US you are. Perhaps there might be BE members in your area or a British club that you can join and at the very least be with those familiar with your background ;-)

Do you work? What interests do you have outside the house? Have you thought of going back to school, taking classes, whatever?

Homesickness must be horrible to suffer through. I don't know first hand but from reading on BE I know that others either give in the feelings of loneliness, isolation and despair or they pull up their stocks and venture out in public and make a life for themselves. They still are homesick but at least they are busy which takes some of the cutting edge off of the emotion.

Hugs
Rete
