I bought a jar of Vegemite a couple of years ago, and could barely tell the difference between it and Marmite.

Marmite is better but not by much.

Marmite is sort of watery and is a beef extract, Vegemite is thick and is a yeast extract, made from yeast that remains after brewing beer. Worlds apart in taste for an Aussie. Brit husband loves Marmite, hates Vegemite - good, all the more for me.

Describing them doesn't make them sound any more attractive. ;)

Nope! That is totally wrong! Marmite is made from yeast too - and in fact is is marked on the lable as suitable for vegetarians. Marmite is made in Tamworth, home to several major breweries, from where they get the yeast.

The recipe for Marmite and Vegemite is virtually identical, which is why the taste is extremely similar.

It sounds like you're confusing Marmite with Bovril, which is a little thinner in consistency than Marmite, and is made from rendered beef. It is also usually consumed by making a drink from it, one teaspoon full in a mug, though I have heard of people spreading it on bread. Bovril is sold in the same sort of jar as Marmite, but has a red cap and red lable.

Well.. considering what you have to work with, it's a pretty good effort. ;)

I don't think that is possible.

We're happy little Vegemites
As bright as bright can be
We all enjoy our Vegemite
For breakfast lunch and tea
Our mummies say we're growing stronger every single week
Because we love our Vegemite
We all adore our Vegemite
It puts a rose in every cheek

Australia's alternative National Anthem since 1962

Well there you go - I always thought Marmite was made out of cow gizzard paste but it isn't! Thanks Pulaski

Yes, I was thinking of Bovril, Mum used to make us drinks out of it when we were sick to 'build us up'. Make us spew, more like it. (ps apologies to Bovril fans, you mad things)

Vegemite is much nicer than Marmite. Loves me some vegemite on buttery toast, marmite not so much.

Anything that has "mite" in its name sounds like the bugs that live in dogs and cats ears. Therefore, if you want to eat ear bugs then by all means have your vegemite or marmite.
