Re: multi-region DVD players
We have a cheapo hacked DVD player, basic but perfectly functional.
Recently I splashed out on a Bose 321 system, was blown away by the sound quality from these two little speakers whilst browsing for a full-on surround system in Best Buy. It is as good as the adverts claim.
Unfortunately our initial online searches haven't found a hack to allow us to play our Brit DVS on it - if you guys/gals are able to show otherwise that would be awesome.
Edit: Someone has posted this. Will give it a shot.

Bah, apparently the tech-wife has already tried that:
Only works on European Bose. There is a piece of firmware to convert US to EU Bose, but to date I have had no success finding it online.
If anyone is able to track down that firmware, that would be ace.

Games are not region encoded - blu ray is and you would need to get it chipped. That said the vast majority dont have the coding on them - if you do a google you can get a list of the region free ones

Mskills,
Research suggests the firmware is within this google group, but you have to sign up to get access:-
http://groups.google.com/group/homeavinfo
Found within last post of this forum:-

Good luck

Re: multi-region DVD players
there are lots. I use the following: yamaha DVD S657 running to a non digital tv.
its a region 3 machine (no modification needed), bought from an importer near chicago it plays any DVD on any tv, it converts the pal signal to NTSC (rather well) and vice versa.
It also importantly outputs a REAL PAL signal if you have a PAL capable TV. the pal>ntsc conversion generally works well but some times you get a different feel to the image, eg, my UK doctor who discs (vintage doctor who) give the impression of being a 'film' rather than a studio look, if you see what i mean, it something to do with the way the frame rate looks, anyway it only happens with some discs but generally its impossible to tell.
it cost $220 (you do get what you pay for) but machines that do the same can be had for $80.

Re: multi-region DVD players
I just bought a Phillips DVP 3960 from Wally World for $40. Follow this link for the hack:

Works fine, plays all regions after the hack. Has 720p/1080i upscaling, HDMI output and even plays AVI DIVX files

Re: multi-region DVD players
quick question.
people who have hacked these low price dvd players, you are now able to play UK pal discs on an NTSC TV?? seems that theres also a PAL>NTSC conversion happening there too?
