If you're not confident about hacking (although it's very easy) then dvdoverseas.com has pukka region-free players, along with voltage converters and useful general info...

(Cue the "bring your electrical goods with you!", "no! leave them behind and buy new!" debate).

Some of the retailers will do it for you for a fee. Still invalidates the warranty but if you really want to watch those old dvds then what are you going to do?

There are so many threads on this topic with quite a few recommendations, Ray's is a good one for a simple basic player though

Sorry to hijack this thread and maybe this question has come up loads of times.

How do you do the same thing to a PS3 (blu-ray player) to make it play multi-region DVDs (not worried about games) is it as simple?

Whatever you do, don't go into Best Buy, walk up to the customer service desk and ask for one. I pretty much got asked to leave the store

PS3s are already region free. That is if you bought it early enough, or so my husband tells me. Ours is.

My husband did it himself but I'm one of those people that doesn't like to mess with things that aren't supposed to be messed with!

I don't think it is region free - although some early blu-ray disks were region free so you could play them in any region.

Hacking it may be quite a bit of hassle, I have never seen anything to suggest it is easy.

You can buy a multi region dvd .... Bombay Electronics in Chicago has them and they have a website with all manner of goodies ...or go to Walmart find the cheapest model ...write down the model number and google for dvd hacks.
Bought a $30 Coby dvd player last year and during setup I simply changed the dvd region to zero (region free) using the onscreen display....no codes or anything ....

It plays PS3 games that he bought in Europe as well as all his old PS2 ones. Hacking Playstations in general is a nightmare. We had two PS2s in Europe, a local one and a US one so that he could play the games that only get released here. The power cables were simply interchangeable. But two PS3s is going to get expensive!

Often the cheapest player in Target etc. can be hacked easily (just google the model number and "hack"), but I've found they last about a year before dying, and often struggle with scratched discs.

I've been very impressed with the Philips DVP5140 ($45 from Amazon.com) - easy to make it multiregion using the remote and copes with everything we throw at it.
