In the early days, there was a lot of crappy DVD copying. Today's encoders are pretty good though. I can't see much if any of a difference between a DVD and a well-ripped copy.

When you get over here with your 300 Jennifer Lopez DVDs in Region 2 / PAL format, you will presumably want a DVD player to watch them on? If you aren't using a computer with AnyDVD you could definitely do worse than try a Philips DVP642 (for a regular non-HD machine) - should be between $30 and $50 at Best Buy. Also, here's the region-free hack:

1. Turn on the player.
2. Open the tray.
3. Press the following sequence on the remote:
7 8 9 OK 0
4. The number 0 will appear on the lower left side of your screen.
5. Your player is now region free! Put in a DVD and enjoy!

So what's the consensus on "non-original" DVDs?

I have some first generation backups of some DVDs, am I ok to jam these in a CD wallet and ship these with the stuff I am sending over by freight?

Much chance of "inspection" / fine?

i was ready to use the excuse that backing up my dvds removes region protections so i can watch them here.... and i gave away my origionals as they wouldnt work.

Didnt need it in the end

It seems so long ago that I posted this thread! I move on Tuesday!!

I decided to just pack them all into a dvd wallet that can hold 420 DVDs, threw away the cases but kept the inlay covers, and then I'll buy new cases when I get there.

You might find you won't even bother. I put all mine in a DVD wallet and have not used/looked at the cases or inserts in 2 years. The only reason to buy cases might be if you were going to sell them ...

there's a pretty good open source knock off that I used, but couldn't be bothered to add all the movies in the end
