I shovel my snow with an actual shovel. We have a lovely neighbor who is retired and bought himself a $1400 deluxe snow blower. He only just retired last year and is evidently bored. Consequently some days he clears all our driveways before we get home from work. Nice chap.

OMG, twelve inches in April!

However, to counter that .... here in the northeast we had the freak Halloween snowstorm of 2011.

Yes, that's quite a driveway you have to clear, Yukichon! It's probably ten times the length of our drive. At least it's nice and flat, not a hill.

Beautiful photo however! It looks idyllic. Is that the recent snowfall CO had? The day before yesterday? We have a relative moving there soon, so we're keeping an eye on the weather.

Those of you in Florida, Texas, California can ignore this thread

For those of us in the places where snow is about to hit, how do you clear your drive?
Last year I was in a house with a small drive so manager with just a snow shovel and hard work

Now I have a much longer driveway so am trying to decide on hiring a snowplow guy or to get myself a snowblower. What do you do?

Last year I was over in the MN/SD snow and I dealt with by ...seeing it as an adventure.
The gf lived in an apartment in the city so no real issues at home but we were on a roadtrip so some mornings were eventful..
Now we have a place out in the sticks so when I land next week we're going shopping for a two-stage blower.

It depends on what you need to clear. Depth of snow, type of surface (gravel or smooth), area to be cleared.

I only have a small drive so I use a shovel and that does the job.

I suppose it depends on how long the drive is and how much you'd be charged for snow services vs the running cost of a snowblower.

You didn't say Arizonans couldn't contribute:-)

Actually AZDOT tweeted pictures of their shiny snow plows to much amusement.

Whatever you can afford.

Though you should still have a decent, bladed shovel. You'll need it for the steps and braking the ice.

I guess it all depends on how good your town deals with the snow. If they're quick, then just park the car end of the drive and shovel out the ploughed in bit and you're good to go and can shovel later at your hearts content and buy a snow blower end of season when they're dirt cheap.

Getting someone to do it, well depends how soon they'll come out or if they'll come back periodically. No point having a chap do the drive if they get there at 10am and you've got to leave for work by 7.

Grand Rapids is right there in the snowbelt, I would look into a snow blower. Up here in the tip of the mitt we managed to get our hands on a beater plow truck for our driveway which is about 100ft long and 3 cars wide.

As the originator of this mentioned thread, I don't at all mind seeing another one on the same topic. Unlike some threads in the Trailer Park as of late, I felt that one ended too soon.

Perhaps it was premature (early September), and people weren't ready yet to get as serious about their snow as they are now the snow-prone parts of this country have actually started receiving some of the white stuff.

We have a short flat driveway, and the husband & I own two shovels, one heavy and one light. Car is parked inside the garage. We'll see how this winter goes.

I agree.

My thought was to rejuvinate and continue the original thread, not duplicate it. Being as the threads are close together in time and for the same upcoming winter season, perhaps they should be merged so as to continue the original thread and eliminate the need for people to re-post what they've only recently posted.
