I have friends in Stockport (Bramall). They support ManCity and *cough*ManU*cough* and are wife and husband respectively. I well know the sulk over footie teams but if I try to offer any objective advice or consolation, I get "sherrup! you're a Yank AND a woman, you wouldn't get it!"

This is why I always check the BBC tables often, and especially after weekends. :D

Standard banter between Englishman and Scotsman:
Englishman: "We call the Scotsmen jocks."
Me: "Don't the Scotsmen call YOU sassenach or some such?"
Scotsman: "No, we just call them wankers."

The north-south divide is fun too. There were several Killing Joke gigs ooooop north and the southern contingent were tenderfootedly asking for directions. One northerner paused, then said: "well, you start out on the M1 under the sign that says 'The North.' You drive until all you see are farms and the motorway turns into a gravelly path. You then take a left at t'pit, a right at t'mill, and you're there. If you get lost, ask someone wearing a flat cap and sensible boots. T'others walking along the side of the road are lost Southerners like yerselves."

(And here I was thinking, do they not sell maps in London, cos I've bought some at my local bookstores!!!! Ordinance, Michelin, you name it!)

The curryhouses, which I have eaten at, and the real estate. I can't repeat what my Stockport-born ex-fiance says of Stockport. It involves references to bodily orifices.

By the by Bramall was quite nice compared to say Strangeways.

I was only up on the roof sunbathing, and the next minute the bastards were firing water canons and stuff at me.

His mistake was sunbathing naked. :D That's why the water cannons were fired at him. Anything to get him clothed again and off the roof.
