My MIL will be over visiting in June for a few months and she is shopping around for some short term medical insurance to cover her whilst here. Are there any good programs that she can buy in the UK before coming out or should we look for something short term for her here in the States? Help would be appreciated. Ta.

Can we still go through them even though we bought her ticket here for her?

It also depends on how old you MIL is and the exact amount of days she will be visiting...

I know direct line covers for 90 days if you are under 60 but only 42 if you are over..

Tesco travel insurance only covers those under 64 and max time is 42 days

Its a good idea to go to http://www.moneysupermarket.com/travelinsurance/

As they compare all insurance providers and you have the option of selecting travel insurance for those under 65 or those over...

Again it depends how old the MIL is and how long she is coming for, the OP stated that a few months so should be careful to make sure that period of time is covered, make sure to check out the clauses in the insurance document. For instance, the one at http://www.moneysupermarket.com/trav...sp?id=13331631

states;

'Maximum period of cover for those aged 80-89 is 21 days for USA/Canada and 31 days for the rest of the world.'

Absolutely. NB that medical insurance is not travel insurance (missed flights, lost bags etc), but travel insurance sometimes includes medical insurance.

A lot depends on age and existing health. My 80 year old in-laws were thinking of coming over for my son's wedding, staying about a month (pretty gutsy of them I thought!)
Saga wanted $800 for father-in-law who is in pretty good shape apart from type 2 diabetis which he controls with diet but they wanted $6000 for mother-in-law who has a dicky heart. Needless to say they will be staying home & getting lots of photos!

Try Saga. Also Columbus Direct or Boots.
Have had insurance (annual and RTW trip policies) from Columbus and Boots and they were pretty competetive with good cover.
At the time I was little younger but you should get reasonable service from them in assessing quotes.

Good Luck

The policy should probably be from a UK Company, in case something happens, and she needs to be Med-Flighted back to the UK.

Jim.

Thanks folks, mil is 83 and the price for the old girl is staggering, especially since she had a hip replacement op last year. She is going to be here just under a month. So, we are still shopping around. The price appears to be based on whether she honours her return ticket in a seat or in a box. So, we will just cough up the dosh to make sure she has peace of mind. I think I need to try stall this getting old stuff, it is rather expensive.
