Sorry, but I couldn't resist checking a few more plates. Turns out all the following are available in TX: CBP, ATF, BATFE, FEDS.

There's loads of cars without them - the cops seem to ignore it unless they stop you for something else and want to pile on the offenses they put on the ticket. We went for 2 years before we bothered getting a front plate and never got stopped but you are technically running a risk of a ticket if you don't have one.
In MA, if you've got the older plates with the green letters, you only needed rear plates, but the newer red plates you have to have front/rear.
People do get tickets for not having a front during the beginning/end of month to get quotes in my neck of the woods, less of an issue during the month and in other towns....also can't get the car inspected with only one plate and a failed inspection gets tagged to your drivers license so if you don't get it sorted in the 10/60 day limit depending on the issue, your license gets nulled and then you get done for driving without a license too
So evil in MA.
