License Plate - URGENT!

Hi folks,

I have only the rear plate on my car (as it's common in Nevada) and now I have to travel to California for 2 days only. Do I have to get a front plate installed on my car to drive in California?

Thanks

My understanding is if your car is legal in your home State and you are only visiting another State it is acceptable there.

That is true. Wonder what is urgent?

That's correct. Unless you are remaining in another state long enough to need to declare residency and re-register your car in that state, you don't have to make any adjustments to your legal home-state plates.

A friend of mine from PA (one-plate state) went to uni in NY (two-state plate) and didn't have to change, as his home address was still PA.

Dunno, but it's available as a license plate in TX.

I'll stop messing about now.

No it only matters if you have a front tag if you're resident of a state that requires it. I drive to Maryland sometimes (back and front tags) and I live in PA (rear only) and the police never have pulled me over. You'll be fine

We have front and rear on one car and only rear on another. Didn't realise it was such an issue

Well if you live in a state that requires front and rear, you have to get the front one as well or you can be fined. OP just didn't know if it was legal for a NV registered car (rear tag only) to drive to CA without being pulled over for not having a front tag.

So I better put the front plates on then!

There's loads of cars without them - the cops seem to ignore it unless they stop you for something else and want to pile on the offenses they put on the ticket. We went for 2 years before we bothered getting a front plate and never got stopped but you are technically running a risk of a ticket if you don't have one.

Dh has been asking me to order him a new front plate, he lost his years ago and doesn't want a white one as the car is a 1970, so I have to get one made online, blue with yellow letters, he wants it for his birthday

Back then, the rear license plate bracket fell off the back of my 68 bug. I was annoyed switching from the black abc 123 plates to the then new blue 123 abc plates. I remember in 1979 having one of the last 123 abc plates before they went over to new seven digit 1abc123 plates. I remember the period where you could either have the new white reflector 2abc123 plates or the blue 1abc123 plates -- the latter being cheaper. The 2abc123 plates are classics now because they had the "O" in California as a rising sun. My 2004 car is in the 5abc123 series and I'm now seeing a few 7abc123 series.

Any body know at what age vehicle one can use superceded plates? There is a 1962 Impala up the street with the Yellow plates which were replaced in 1963. [California used to alternate between black with yellow letters and yellow with black letters. I remember two of these changes -- since 1963, the original plates can stay with the car.]
