Default Laid off suddenly on H1-B. Concerned about legal status now.

Can anyone give me decent advice please?

I started work on June 17, 2002 with H1-B status. Unfortunately I was laid off on October 16, 2002.

How long am I allowed to stay in the US? Do I have to change my status to a tourist visa?

I have started looking for another job and have a couple of interviews lined up. What would a US employer have to do to employ me?

While I am waiting to start a full-time job, am I allowed to do any temporary work (e.g. bar work/telephone sales)? What kind of trouble, if any, would such an employer be in given my current status?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
