Default Kindergarten Registration Experience.

So obviously it's all going to be different in various areas but be interested to see how it was for everyone else, as we've just registered our eldest.

The town had a kindergarten school, but it's closing it down and moving it into the 3 elementary schools, so we had to go to a town site to do a "online" registration, basically name and select school we were nearest, using a map that outlined the catchment area.

Day later, we got a call to arrange an appointment to go to the school to do the actual registration, had that yesterday. No mention that we had to have a bunch of stuff prepared in advance, we found that out by chance and had a bit of a scramble.

We needed either a birth cert or passport for the kid, a mortgage/lease statement or affidavit from landlord if renting monthly, which we've got to fax in. Also need a utility bill that's on paper from the company that is within 60 days old, a challenge as we're all e-pay, but had to either be cable, landline, gas or electric bill.

A valid state ID/drivers license for one of the parents.

Medical exam history sheet, ours is having her 5th year exam in the summer, so it was still missing a couple of jabs, so we need to drop that off when she gets them, but she needs before school starts DPTx5, HepBx3, Poliox4, MMRx2, VarivaxX2. Also need a eye test for acuity and stereopsis and a lead test with result.

We also had to have a form saying we're native English speakers or not, had to sign a student photo release for them to use pics on website/papers and then a general background on us as well as contact emergency people.

We're only doing half day as it's free for town residents, but if you want full day, there was extra info on that to fill in, plus a none refundable deposit, about $400. If you then wanted financial help with the cost or with lunches, that was extra paperwork, earning less than 25% of state median got 100% paid up on a sliding scale to paying 75% at the median income. You needed 2 years worth of tax returns and two recent pay stubs, info about mortgage/rental cost and any student loans.

In April, you find out if you got into the full day program.

In May, you get invited to a screening test for the kid, arranged online to be done at the school.

After the screening, you'll be informed if you got the morning or afternoon session, you don't get a choice. Then you get a tour of the whole school.

In August, we find out who the kids teacher will be and by first day of school, if you're doing full day, first instalment of fee is expected. It's $3600 a year, plus that deposit.

Bit of a risk if you want full day and don't get it as there's only 15 slots for full day per school.

Quite exhausting that....and we discovered when the school sign that points to visitor parking, means find a spot anywhere possible because there isn't any actual visitor parking and there was a cop going around ticketing cars that were double parked :/

Crikey Bob, sounds exhausting!

My son will be going this fall also and this is how it works here.

Kindergarten information night held in March where the three principles give a speech about the various programs.

Stop by town hall or the school and pick up a registration pack which is mostly hand-outs about developmental stages but also your intent to register, name address, Childs birthday.

August, right before school starts, meet the teacher and do a simple screening for speech, hearing, vision. Child goes into classroom while you sit outside filling in paperwork about emergency contacts and bus information.

Oh and it's full day here, which I have mixed feelings about but seems to be practical for working parents, no half day option available.

Its so bittersweet, I'm putting my youngest of three on the bus this September and I'm quite sad about that.

It was, we were only there 15 mins and was knackered.

Saw the school admin, then a school nurse.

Oh yeah, kid must be 5 by last day in August with no exceptions for kindergarten.

And no bus for us. You've got to live x miles away from the school to get a bus pick up and we're just inside the limit, it's a couple of miles away, smidge under.

Heres how ours works.
Call in the school office and they give you a packet.
Go home fill it all out, includes loads of info name, age, sex, vaccinations, SSN, languages spoken the home, how many adults, kids under 18 and on and on.
Then take it back and they call you with an appointment to come in with the child.
Arrive for appointment, it's in the school library, all the K teachers are there and another 9 or so children, so about 10 in total. They sit all the kids on a carpet, parents at the tables in the back (you can see) they do story time, and chat with the teachers, while one tells us what they will be doing, and why, and hands out any bits of papers that we'd forgotten or missed in the packet and matches kids with vaccine records, and does that kind of stuff. After that each child is given a paper and crayons, asked to put their name at the top and draw something they specify.
Then we all go home.
We then get a letter saying what class they will be in and teacher name and the date of first day. then we get a card from teacher inviting the child to afternoon tea in the classroom. about a week before school starts so they can get to see everything.

Wow! I can't believe you're oldest is already ready for school!

Registration for Kinders can be so different everywhere you go. Our 11 year old is quite past that age, of course, but 7 years ago (her birthday is in the cutoff month, so she was 4 when we registered) it wasn't that crazy. But in all honesty, I have friends that have registered there kiddos and it's just not that crazy here. My biggest issue was that they had to take tests to see if they knew their shapes, colors, could count to 100, etc. And we live in a state that you can opt out of vaccinations if you choose, so no high pressure to have her completely vaccinated. I chose a school that I had worked at, knew the teacher and it was a full day kindergarten. No cost, but of course now they're charging...

Well I can truthfully say it doesn't get any easier as they go along. Buckle up for the ride!

Interesting to read what it's like everywhere!

I can't find any info on where & when to register for Kindergarten at our local school! No one has been talking about it at my kids' preschool so I don't think anyone else is doing it this early. Maybe it's more relaxed here in FL? Also, we are having our almost 5yo tested for the public "gifted" program next month so no point registering until then maybe. She is already reading books and she knows a lot... so I really hope she gets into the gifted otherwise she might be bored in K and start causing trouble. Also we might be moving this summer to somewhere where I can get a job, just to further complicate things! If we move to another state this summer it won't be too late to register for Kindergarten then will it? *panic*

Aye, it's weird how some things can be really quick and easy, yet others be such a major hassle.

Oh and the registration site for us reminded me out of something from geocities

So a bit of a update.

In the last couple of weeks.

We've gotten a letter from the school about list of stuff to get, which wasn't that extensive, folder, crayons, felt pens, pencils, sharpener, case and bag.

We've had a package of info from food services, basically how we can pay for school food, which for full day kids is $2.75 per lunch including a carton of milk. For half day kids, who only do a snack, they can get a carton of milk for 50c or opt not to and bring their own.

We've gotten a letter saying that we're able to use the school bus and have a bus pass for the kid to use. The state requires K-6 to provide buses for kids further than 2 miles from the school, our town offers it for K-12 and from a half mile for little kids, a mile at middle school and 1.5m for the highschool. We have a bus route, but weirdly, not a time.

Also have been invited to a school orientation "party", where kids get to ride the school bus and learn how the system works for pick/drop offs later in the week as well as to meet the actual teacher.

We have a folder that lists all the monthly school board, parent board and teacher/parent meetings, as well as the school public days off and the 5 or so fund raising events they have planned for the year, including bake sales.

We did the orientation thing for our daughter. She wasn't ever going to ride the bus because she was out of district and I took her to school, but she enjoyed the ride on the bus around the school parking lot anyway. She also got to meet her teacher and see her room and basically got to see the whole school. It was a lot of fun for her.

Have you not started school yet Bob? My daughter started this Monday just gone, it was only a third of the class, then she was off Tue & Wed as the other 2/3rds of the class started. Then all of the class Thu & Fri. We live just around the corner from school so went on scooter / half jogging. She has to be there at 7.45 for the first bell! (That's a bit of a shocker and takes getting used to for someone who's used to preschool start at 9.)

The teacher, class and school seem great and so far we're very happy. School uniform is bliss as otherwise it would have turned into a fashion show for 5-year-old girls every day. They wear dresses, polo shirts, skirts in different colors with school logo. (boys wear shorts)

We got lots of papers with info about everything from days off to PE days (rotating) to of course joining the PTA and buying a car sticker.

Pickup is at 2pm and the scary thing is the kids just come out, if you're not there they still come out, which is different from preschool. I told my daughter if I'm ever not there tell xx's mom or a teacher that you can't find your mom. (Hope it never happens!)

Our lunch is $1.85 and they can get chocolate milk which my daughter is very excited about! We can pay online so no one can steal her lunch money...

School supply list was quite long and included print paper, colored print paper, soap, paper towels, as well as all the normal stuff like pencils.

But we are happy school is free and not $1000 a month like preschool!

It's weird, because she got a tour of the school and classrooms back when they did the school testing, but didn't meet the teachers, most were on holiday back then I guess.

She's getting excited by it, the bus mostly...even though we could just walk it...

No, they start in a couple weeks. The older kids start next week.

Neighbouring towns, a lot have started this week...it's because of some of the brutal snow days, really messed up when schools got done for the year and they need x number of days before starting up or something.

here in ohio the school district publish a date when the new incoming KG can register. You have to ring in to a special hotline and get a code - then put that in online and fill in a lot of the details. Then you can pick a timeslot for the 2 day screening for your school.

On that screening the do a few competency tests, collect the medical forms, give an equipment list etc.

a week or so before school starts the district lists which day your school allocations will be posted (we have 13 elems in this district so they post them at different times a day on different days to spread the traffic). The site gives you the teacher name and the bus stop time (and location). We are about a mile away form the school and our 'stop' is just around the corner.

Two days before school starts you go to an open house and meet the teacher you were allocated. (ie whole school is in meeting their teacher so its busy). get any last minute paperwork, drop off your supplies, charge up the lunch money account, tour etc. You have to state how the kid will be going home from school normally and on that first day on a form.

then on the day they get on the bus and thats it! The teacher walks the kids at the end of the day to the correct place (ie to the latchkey after school club in the hall, to their school bus or day nursery bus, or to the front door if they are walker. They are not just 'let out' unless their parent has said they are a 'walker'.
