It's not just an 'British thing' though

I'm remembering now an article I read about Italians who migrated to the US around the turn of the last century. Something like 3 million left Italy. But as the article pointed out, approx. half or more of those eventually returned to Italy.

And I'm remembering all the Dutch people who used to live in Australia, mid last century, particularly on the Gold Coast. Where are they now ? I know several Dutch families who returned to Europe, after giving Oz much more than just a 'good try'.

I don't know anything specifically about the Italian situation, but I do know a little bit about the Greeks from the same era. 90% of the village population expatriated, most of the to the US. There had already been so much starvation and hardship during the war, people simply had to leave to live.
They scattered all over the world, did their time, and returned to the homeland to retire the way they always intended to.
