Ironman Hawaii 2003
Just returned from Hawaii, celebrating our 80th anniversary. Oh ok, it just seems like it! *S*
The 25th Ironman Triathlon was being held while we were there; what a treat that was. There were about forty or so Brits that took part, one even came in 44th out of over 1600 contestants! His name is Steven Sheldrake. Met a few Brits that had come over to just cheer everyone on, especially our lot. I held the Union Jack up along with them; it felt so good to be part of such a wonderful experience.
They must first swim 2.4 miles, followed by a gruelling 112 mile bike ride, only to finish it all offwith a 26.2 mile run! We were in awe; hubby is an avid cyclist, the 112 bike ride would be a walk in the park for him, the rest? Forget it!
There were folks with half a leg, arms in slings, bloody knees etc. People do this triathlon for many reasons; the most inspiring one is the Hoyt, father /son team. See attached info. Now this is the true definition of love. Sadly, we did not get to see them as they only completed the swim portion. The dad had heart surgery recently, which may have contributed to this. Finishing in seventeen hours or less qualfies one as an Ironman. The oldest one to pass the finish line was a seventy five year old! Way to go!
