We use Ooma which is a VoIP system. Works on our regular home telephones so no messing about with laptops. We pay 9.99 for 1000 minutes to the UKx We couldn't find anything cheaper and after paying for the hardware - about $100 - it has paid for itself after a month or so. Plus all USA calls are totally free and no sound quality issues with calling UK. We love it and especially so as I got to stick it to rip off AT&T.

Me and my brother are using COMFI calling cards. For UK-US communication we are well satisfied. 1.6¢/min and you can phone from from home, work, or cell phone.

Yeah, once you get below 2¢/minute, unless you are spending hours a week on the phone to the UK, it is more trouble than it's worth trying to shave a few tenths of a cent off the rate.

This whole international thing is driving me nuts here...

I've got a UK skype number so people in the UK can call me for free - this goes to the home number here...cost about 50 quid per year.

I've got a T-mobile plan for $50 + $10 per month for calling international landlines and sending sms but I've got to pay extra for cal ling an international mobile and I went through $10 very quickly on a very few calls.

We've also got a landline at home which we got in a bundle and I didn't pay for the international extra

With all this going on, the only phone which the whole family can use for international calls is my mobile.

So for google voice, I would still need to have a US carrier? still need the skype number for the folks back home to call me? And I'd still be paying to call mobile numbers (although reduced rates) in europe?

If the older folks back home had mobile phones then I'd just stick to Viber - which is mobile to mobile and free. Works well that way, unlike skype mobile which is crap.

We use Pingo and Voice88. Both about 1.5 to landlines, auto recharges so no interuption, use both just in case either is at capacity or not performing well (internet can sometimes be echoey). Both pretty good.calling home is a non-issue nowadays.
