Oh I don't know. If he has good legs, a bit of a tan.....
And, shorts do not carry the same doubts about the sexual orientation of the wearer....:) The football shirts were bad enough........but these tourists really need a warning about wearing their capri pants in the US....talk about giving your average Brit tourist bloke a bad name! |

I remember coming on holiday to Orlando... they cater a lot to British tourists esp around I-drive. I remember there was a British pub at the Mercado, and many shops on I-drive/Disney World (Epcot) that sell English goods.
Just googled it... the pub is called The Cricketer Arms (8445 International Drive) |

Re: Initial impressions of Florida
I lived in Fort Lauderdale for 2 years ,a few years ago now. But i just wore what was "IN" at that time. I was a very young and trendy, always up to fashion in the UK,but when you go to a different country you will need to blend in. I struggled with this, but honestly when you get over that you will feel much more at home.:D
We now live in Canada and have done for over 7yrs. I NEVER owned a pair of jeans before i left the UK,only ever wore suites and NEXT,WALLIS and designer stuff.Every day i got "where are you going today"...."got an interview?,i looked in the mirror and thought YOU LOOK ODD HERE! :blink:so that day i put all of my beatiful clothes in a bag,and went out and bought some jeans.I still like nice clothes, but tend to fit in now.I do buy tons of nice stuff when i go back, but i have'nt been back for 5yrs. As for missing the UK,that is normal. But give it atleast 2yrs before you go back. hope things get better......................THEY WILL FOR SURE! |

If you are planning on staying here permanently....and I think that is the mindset you should have.....then force yourself to accept, adapt and improvise as was said somewhere below. |

Welcome to Florida- as for me- been here 19 years (moving back in a couple yrs)
but Publix has got a lot of Brit stuff (we are down the "ethnic" isle) ! there some Brit shops too but publix is cheaper. you can get good british bangers at Great western meats in Orlando. For footy- with satelitte i get fox soccer channel and Setanta sports I see nearly every Prem league game live over the weekend . I also get (thru ESPN) and in High def the champions league. setanta also showing the carling and fa cups as well as rugger. for tv no problem anymore -join UKNOVA or the box,(gotta be offered a membership) or you wont get in -its free. I am up to date on all Brit shows inc EE, Doc Martin, New tricks etc. download the torrents-burn to DVD as a DIVx file- watch on your US TV. and thanks to the net you can read the BBC online as well as the telegraph, and the sun etc etc. and you can still vote in UK elections ! I love Florida Winters hate Florida summers dont like the lower wages and the US in general is work work work-no more 35 hr work weeks and 6 weeks holiday..... you will find the people you get to know are diamonds-very friendly. |

Hi,
Just a few comments from a brit who has just landed in Florida (a month) That's right, I live up the road from Disney and laugh at holiday-ing brits as they succumb to the delights of International Drive. But the honeymoon period is over and 2nd stage culture shock is creeping up, i'm craving certain English things like crazy. The job hunt is frustrating and driving is a pain. But I know things will be better in the long run :) In short my wife is from here and gave it a good crack of the whip in England but missed the US a lot and could not settle. 3 years and a lot of money later we are here and i'm positive about things. So how do you stay conected to English-ness? As a creative i miss Englsih/European style. I know New York is up the road (ish) but Florida is a laid back holiday state, with bad taste. Any tips on getting UK clothes shipped cheap? Also I really don't want to loose my accent, anyone got weird anglo-american ones going down? TV and Football. i just give up on these. TV here is so bad I just have to leave the room. Driving. Is anyone else shocked at how easy it is for young americans to get a license and then drive a huge dodge ram? Food. I love it here, but my body took weeks to adjust with stomach aches, anyone else get that? Don't live in Florida, so can't comment on the clothing, especially for a guy. But, I do love Disney World. My favourite place in America so far...........but, I wouldn't want to live there.:o Okay, the accent thing. I had a really broad Scottish accent when I moved over, and nobody could understand me, so I worked on speaking very slow and announcing every syllable so I didn't have to constantly say the same thing over and over again. Practically wiped out my Scottish accent, and now I just sound weird:( Try your best not to change your accent, as it is one thing I really really miss about back home, our lovely accents:thumbsup: Can't wait to go home and get my accent back |

As for Europe/UK style, IMHO no one style is better, its a matter of perspective, theyre just different from each other. The longer you're here you'll realise that. ... and the clothes here are the same as you get at home too - theyre made in the same place right?? China/Malaysia/India ??? Good luck to you anyway |
