Is this information correct?
I will be arriving into the U.S on a TD visa (my wife will have a TN visa). She was told by her employer that after 3 months probation they will write her a letter stating she is employed by them - this will apparently allow me to get work authorization in the U.S. Is anyone familiar with this? Will I be able to work immediately after the letter is written or where does it have to be sent? We were informed to hire a lawyer for all of the paperwork... will this be necessary? Hope to hear from someone soon...

TD spouses do NOT get employment authorization, regardless whether or not
the employer writes such a letter.
The employer must have confused it with the L-2 status. Even in that
case, the procedure is quite different (although a letter from the
employer indeed helps).

First, your wife will NOT have a TN Visa. She will enter the US in TN
STATUS. As with most categories, Canadians do NOT need or get passport
visas to enter the US.
You will enter with TD status, and presumably if you're a Canadian you
too will not have a visa (if you're not a Canadian, you may have to get
a passport visa).
TDs cannot work. Period. No three month thing (this one is really news
to me ... never heard this twist before in 9 years!) If you want to
work in the US, you must be eligible for a work status in your own
right.
