Hiya BL. When I moved to the US in 1995 I was a lovely svelte 7 1/2 stone, 105 pounds. I not only gradually gained weight, but my weight shifted around. With a society bent on not putting one foot infront of another, it's too easy to become plump.
Every day for work, I walk 15 minutes each way once I get to the train station. I see my bum already firming up. Also, the food here is so much fresher here in NZ, with a lot more food produced locally.
Best of luck with your weight loss! x

I put on about 10 pounds after I had my daughter, and haven't lost it, which I'm glad of, because it's a better weight for me. I remember going home to the UK about 4 years ago, and I weighed the most I ever have. Within 5 days, I dropped 7 pounds without trying, simply because I was walking everywhere. I didn't eat less either - how can you eat less when you can buy vanillas, custards and Battenburg cakes all day long back in the UK? I think that when you go back, you will lose that weight. Just get off your bum and walk!

This is an interesting column in men's health magazine linked to a book called Eat this Not That, it sums up the eating out issues/dangers in the US.

Re: I Weighed Myself Today...
I had oatmeal today with a tad of Splenda, cinnamon, & skim milk along with a tangerine.....not too bad. Hubby tasted it and said he quite liked it. We're going to try to eat it through the week for breakfast now....

We converted to daily oatmeal quite a while back now. I don't feel right unless I've had it! Best 200 calorie breakfast *ever*.

I agree about the eating out stuff. Unfortunately, I can't blame fast food for my weight gain. I was a food scientist before I started teaching and I know more than I'd like about fast food and convenience food. My problem is that I like beer and I like to cook (and eat my creations)....usually at the same time. Hubby has actually slimmed down a bit since he arrived in the U.S. in June....he needed a belt today for his once snug jeans!
I hope that since hubby and I are both trying to shed a few pounds and live a little healthier, we'll be successful. People that have support tend to "stick with the program."

Whats worried about? That sounds healthy.
Just can't bear those stick-insect broads like Paris-bloody-Hilton There is no way that that is good for a woman.
I accidentally ate a piece of loose chocco this Xmas and nearly puked. It was all waxy and overly sweet.
You know, I think its all because of the "right to have excess" mentality. Don't you find that when you cut back in most things here (like we used to live in England), its more comfortable / familiar and you get a sense of being frugal (warm and fuzzy)?
Like:
Drive thru's
Grocery shopping
Dining out
Using plastic, etc.

I'm now 230lbs and have been in the US since early 04....youch!
I'm at the gym 4-5 times a week and trying (hard) to watch what I eat.
Moving here was a change in lifestyle and I didn't quite understand until I weighed myself too.
You can get back to your former Brit glory.....but its harder work with the diet and lifestyle here. Motivation.........keep it up!!!

Re: I Weighed Myself Today...
I just got back from 10 days in the UK so I am looking at things with 'fresh eyes'. So, I went to the supermarket today and noticed something. Everyone was fat. It was shocking. It is not normal. When I got here in 1992 I was very thin, put on a lot of weight and about 4 years ago lost 30 pounds and have kept it off. I was talking with an American friend of mine today who is trying to loose weight and he said something quite interesting. He said that he was trying to eat smaller portions and less processed food (fish, chicken, veggies etc). He said he couldn't keep it up for long because it wasn't 'normal' to eat that way. I laughed and said that the way most people eat today (especially in the US) is not normal. He's got it the wrong way round. Big portions, processed food etc is not normal for people, hence we have herds of obese people waddling around. Good luck to all with their New Year's weight loss programs!!

Most restaurants around here only let the kids 12 and under order from it.
I like to put up a fight and usually win.
A kids portion to me is a UK portion
