You know, as long as you fit the criteria for time, it may be 18months out of 3 years (can't quite remember) then its relatively straighforward to prove specialist knowledge - if you can show you have been on internal training courses or know about particular process or company technology

i'm in sales which is essentially a common skillset and my l1-b was fine

If that is the case then the OP needs to find a big multinational or american based bank/debt agency to work for. After working there a year or so let HR know that you would be very interested in working in the USA when you have enough experience and they should help you.
