I did it, I got an SUV

It has a bunch of extras too, like Nav, HID headlights, power tailgate, 20" chrome wheels, ambient lighting, etc., etc.
So far, I've had no problems with it (bangs head on wood!). In fact, I just dropped it off for an oil change. Ford has a package where they'll change the oil, rotate and inflate tires, top up fluids and check filters, battery, brakes, belts and hoses for $29.95 (after a $10 MIR), which is hard to beat.
I have to admit to being a Honda fan and my wife drives an '07 CR-V which we bought new, but this deal was too good to pass up.

wouldn't be without my SUV especially in the winter here. We've just bought a Suburban for towing and hauling thank goodness gas prices have been dropping lately.

Maybe due to many years seeing them in films and TV shows e.g. a few Mustang films

I just watch Barrett Jackson on TV (though I went to the Scottsdale one once) and pretend I could bid if I really wanted to.

I believe that you may actually be right. All my life I owned small cars, TR4-A, Porsche 914, Nissan 280Z, Nissan 300ZX, and currently a BMW 330CI and initially I had little back problems but as I got older, my back would ache on trips. Now with my BMW with every possible seat control imaginable, even short trips can cause my back to ache.
I suspect part of the problem is sitting too low and the hardness of expensive leather molded car seats since I can sit at my computer at home all day long and never have any back pain.
If I ever get a new vehicle, it will likely be a SUV.

Not only is the seating position more 'back friendly' in the crossover class, but getting in/out is easier too. I had serious back issues in 2007, and a physical therapist made me go out to my car with him and he watched me getting in and out. He gave me tips to help improve the situation, but said you are pretty stuck given the physical constraints of the car. The ideal seating position for the back is a fairly upright back, horizontal thighs, and vertical legs ... something you can't achieve in a low slung sports car, or even a typical sedan.
I've generally learned to dislike 'sporty' cars for many reasons - mainly the compromises they have to make to make them 'sporty'. In order to provide great cornering, you need a complex suspension, but that is also typically 'stiff' and bumpy. And if you are unlucky enough to hit a pot-hole, you probably knocked the alignment out ... . The rear seats typically don't fold down for extra storage because that would lead to a less rigid 'cage', also needed to maintain the physical handling of the vehicle. My TL needed premium fuel, an extra cost. Insurance is higher due to increased likelihood of accidents. And so on ... All this is fine if you really enjoy pushing a car through its paces, but I finally realized I had no interest in doing that, and I was suffering through all the negatives. My CR-V is lighter, shorter, and narrower than my old TL, and gets better gas mileage ... and has way better carrying capacity.
I just drove 900 miles in 2 days (Scottsdale to Bay Area, overnight in the Sierras (Lone Pine). My back hardly noticed! Being a 4 cylinder, I had to push the gas pedal more to get it to downshift on the mountain roads, but - not exactly a chore!

Yeah, I drove down to Orlando on Saturday and back today - spent the day with my sister and her family who are over from Milton Keynes. It was late night in Magic Kingdom, so we didn't leave the park until 11pm (and it was still open for another two hours!
Stayed with a friend, so got to be at 1:30 and up at 7:30 for the nine hour drive back up (to Northeast Georgia).
Apart from being exhausted through lack of sleep and aching from all the walking and riding Space Mountain, the driving position made the trip a breeze!
