Default I did it, I got an SUV

After being here 15 months the 98 Subaru Outback I got 2 days after arriving fell apart and needed more money to repair than I bought it for.
So after doing some car shopping (yuk) I ended up with my first SUV - 2006 Hyundai Tuscon.
Never thought I'd be an SUV driver but after driving over here they seem to make more sense. I'm not too bothered about MPG and being higher up gives me a better view of all the cornfields along the highway...

and it's sort of a transport bucket list
- Golf GTI - tick
- SUV - now a tick
- Mustang - on the list ( I've had a drive in one next would be to have my own)
- Harley

Congrats! I've had two Hyundai's. An 05 Santa Fe and an 11 Elantra (my wife's car but I've started driving it to work as it has far superior MPG to my SUV). Liked them both. I'm with you on the SUV thing, like being higher up and feeling a little more protected.

Snap! We have a Santa Fe and an Elantra and love them both! We bought both brand new the Santa Fe is almost 10 years old, we plan on replacing that with a new one in a couple of years and the Elanta is five years old, I recently got into an accident with that one and thought it was going to totaled, $8000 later they repaired it, when I thought it was being totaled we where looking at a new Elantra.

I'm thinking of swapping the Elantra for a new SantaFe sport. We have the Elantra and a GMC Acadia at present and although I like the Elantra I could do with it being a bit bigger and the SantaFe sport would fit the bill for us quite nicely.

I absolutely refuse to buy an SUV, but I do see how they are useful over here. I bought a Mazda 3 when I first arrived. Now I'm working, I intend on getting myself a Mustang.

We use the Santa Fe for long trips and when we the whole family goes some where... I use the Elantra as a run around, usually only me in it so there is more than enough room.

An SUV/AWD is a lot nicer than a sedan in the winter.

To go off topic... One thing I don't get is why so many retirement age couple drive mini vans (no passengers)... Must be I see them at the times when they are not hauling their grand kids around?

I used to think that but my back has been giving me problems, and I finally traded in my Acura TL for a boring Honda CR-V 'Crossover' (let's not mix SUV, which is typically a big monster, with Crossover, which is really just a sedan with a bit of a different configuration ...). The seating position is awesome, my back is happy, and I can carry a shit-load more stuff. My gas mileage is better too. I will never go back to anything with low seating, mid-life crisis be damned ... . I look back on my Acura TL, which was very sporty, and realize it was a bumpy, uncomfortable vehicle. I don't give a shit if my CR-V doesn't give me whiplash when I put my foot down ... I'm over that ...

I have a new 2013 Elantra which I love (traded in my 2006 Sonata) and my daughter is still driving my 2001 Elantra which now has over 120,000 miles on her. My other daughter still has her 2006 Santa Fe with close to 100,000 on her.

Hyundai build good cars. If we had a Sonata not an Elantra I probably wouldn't be looking to trade it but if I am going to trade it I'd probably do so for an SUV and we really liked the new SantaFe sport (and the Ford Edge too).

I can't actually remember why we didn't buy the new Tuscon when we bought the Elantra, I think my wife just preferred the look and smaller size of the Elantra and it was intended to be her car. Two years later, in hindsight a small SUV/CUV would have been more practical for us.

I remember a couple of people commenting about us buying Korean made cars but we have been very happy with both, they also stand behind the product with a ten year warranty.
