You should have used a real bank in the first place and not some tight fisted scottish one.
When i moved here I used my HSBC card at ATM's for withdrawals and after I got settled the bank just transfered my funds over.

I would like to think I'm one of the most generous people I know and try to teach my kids the same. 
Anyway, I've been doing the same as what you did when you got here. I'm just withdrawing my daily allowance from the ATM here and depositing it in the bank here. Haven't got a clue what exchange rate I'm getting but at the minute, dont really care, as I'm no further forward with the Bank.
