My HOA picks ours, we have no say.

Interesting, many of my neighbours put out 'recycling' bins alongside their trash as the next neighbourhood over hires a company who recycles. Ours doesn't and twice a week the binmen can be seen emptying all the recycled waste into the same giant cannisters then wagon as the rest of the trash....

Maybe it's a prepay scheme.

Recycling is mandatory here. They do use the same trucks though, but pick up on alternating weeks.

Week 1 trash

Week 2 Recycling

Week 3 Trash

Week 4 recycling

And so on.

Even the trash isn't taken directly to a landfill, it's taken to a sorting facility first where as much of the recyclables are removed before sending off to various landfills and other modes of disposal.

The town near me does trash every week and recycling every other week. We collect enough paper, cardboard, plastic, and glass recyclables* to fill a 96 gallon can every two weeks. It takes us about 3 months to fill a 96 gallon garbage can, and about 1/3 of that is cat litter.

All metal I accumulate and sell to a scrap dealer.

Does that get you a better room - high floor, seaview or whatever?

We get trash Monday/Thursday and recycling every Thursday. Different trucks do collect trash and recycling. We have a 64 gallon can for each - I can normally see the bottom of the trash can when I put it out for "emptying", but I often have to add extra boxes for the recycling.

We take out like 1 trash bag a week, which is mostly food scraps along with loose plastic wrap stuff comes wrapped in which they don't accept for recycling cereal plastic bags stuff like that.

We take out 2-3 bags of recycling stuff, don't go through enough metal to hoard it in an apartment to get anything reasonable price wise, we do take in our soda cans though so we can get the 5 cent deposit back.

How much of the recycling actually gets recycled, I have no clue.
