How much does it cost to bring your pet dog?

How much does it cost to bring your pet dog?
I know it sounds a bit sappy but I'm ever so worried. (That Keira-2007 is always worried, I hear you cry!!) It's true. I worry about everything. In fact I should change my user name to Worrier-2007!
Anyway I just spoke to an estate agent here in England who told me that she couldn't take her 2 cats to Australia because it would have cost her £2000. Does anyone know a rough figure of what it would cost to bring a chunky sized labrador to Chicago? My daughter will be in bits if it proves too expensive! My hubbie says "we're not spending a fortune on a bloody dog!"
Please someone tell me it won't cost thousands???? And will he have to be quarantined? Again my daughter will be distraught if he has to be locked up for months on arrival.
Cor blimey the more I find out about this flipping move the more it worries me! Help someone!:u nsure:

A bunch of friends on the NZ forum have used these people and highly recommend them, so they might be able to give you a quote.
Best of luck, and let us know what the outcome is!

Thanks guys. I'm even more worried now having read that link you posted Jerseygirl. $1700 a year ago! Thats over £800 squiddlies! I hadn't even considered these kind of costs!!
I'll try and get an up-to-date quote from Airpets - thanks Maz! What would I do without you guys!

A lab - you could probably get that in a big suitcase. Give it a snorkel so that it can get some air though and everything should be fine!
Alternatively, just Fed-Ex him!
(I know, I'm not helping)

BTW I left my two large dogs behind...something I will always regret. It is very difficult to find rental property which will allow pets...let alone a large dog.
If I could turn the clock back...I wouldn't have come here without my dogs.

Oh Jerseygirl, that must have been tough - leaving them behind! My daughter would never forgive us. In fact, that's the only reason she's happy to come!!!

Thank you. We thought we'd be returning after a year or two. At that time (11yrs ago) the PETS system wasn't in place...so we thought it best to leave them there rather than put them in quarantine for 6 mths. Another factor was we couldn't find a rental to take 2 large dogs.

It used to be you had to fly them cargo class if you were not on the same plane, but that if you were on the same plane you could fly them classed as excess baggage. This cost me 100 pounds when I did this back in 2001 (i.e., UK to US). I don't know if you can still do this, but why don't you simply call an airline's cargo department and ask them?
US has no quarantine but there is some import/USDA paperwork you have to complete in addition to the usual airline requirements (fitness to fly certificate, etc.). I believe these requirements vary from state to state. You should start by calling the USDA vet in Illinois (Google it).

Taking dogs US to UK is expensive BECAUSE you must fly them cargo class as part of the PETs scheme.

Re: How much does it cost to bring your pet dog?
Hi
Hi
We recently move to the US (La Crosse in Wisconsin). We moved here at the beginning of June this year and our dog a labrador also came 2 weeks later.
I wanted to make sure that we had settled in our home before he arrived.
It cost us a total of £918.00 to get him here, money well spent as far as we are concerned as our two children would never hae forgiven us.
His flight cost £668
He was picked up from my parents home in York to their kennels in colchester (£195) and 1 nights boarding the day before he flew (£15) As we were not there and our dog needed a health certificate to show that he was fit to fly they had a vet give him a health check and this cost £40, my parents offered to do this for us and our vet informed us they would charge us £15 but we payed the £40 as it saved them the hastle and they were already taking care of our dog.
So as you can see it would cost you £668 without all the extras we had, the flight cost included all the arrangements and the crate he travelled in. I think when my husband collected him from Minnieapolis airport that he might of had to pay customs soemthing but it wasnt much.
I hope this information helps and if you would like to know more pm me.

I really underestimated how much it would cost! Looks like I'm gonna have to do some serious sweet talking to my OH! Did you book it directly through the airline or as part of a package like Airpets?
