This is my first post. Please forgive me if I waflle on just a bit. I've been reading the forums a lot over the past few months. I have been here 11 years and, as some others have said, the homesickness only gets worse with time for some.
I originally came here through my former wife (an american) not wanting to live in the UK - I'd lived in OZ for a bit back in the late 80's so I thought that a change of scenery wouldn't be too bad. These days I'm on second marriage and my present wife (also american) won't consider leaving the US so I guess that's another marriage down the tubes. I have a good job and have got all sorts of nice toys and stuff I could not have had back home but I have slowly come to the realization that none of that is as important as seeing my family on a regular basis and watching my nephew grow up. I don't have any kids of my own so I suppose I have less to cement me here than most. I was just back in Wales this past month and plan to go back again in Sept for a school reunion and I think I will use some of that time to scout out possibilities for a more permanent move. The homesickness is eased a little by watching UK Tv over the 'net and regularly buying loads of UK shows on DVD etc but the sheer joy of being home and not having to explain everything I say over and over again and how to pronounce my last name correctly (Meredith) easily defeats the more transient materialist within. I like the yanks, but they aren't the brightest people I've ever met and what used to be entertaining about their general naivety now just drives me absolutely nuts! The US has been good to me but being in cultural exile seems a price too high! My greatest fear is that when I go back is that I'll be stuck without a job (I'm almost 40) and the UK is still a fairly ageist place whether I have the right qualifications or not. Any advice or opinions are always welcome! I know what you mean about the accent thing, it's hard after the novelty wears off. I get really annoyed with stupid questions, people seem like they generally enjoy making a fool of themselves. The other day at a BBQ, someone said the typical line - 'Oh you're Australian'. I replied I was born in Australia, but raised in England, so the accent is English. The guys argued with me that no, in fact, my accent is Australian. Not that I'd know or anything! I really wanted to tell him he had a Canadian accent! |

Speaking of hammered, I wonder how Al & Stephanie are feeling after our Saturday night expat meet up?!? |

Generalization !! my misses is as sharp as they come
I think many people in *all* countries of the world are usually ignorant about anything or place outside their immediate sphere. I'm currently living in New Zealand and find just about everyone I've met in two years is utterly ignorant of American people, places, ways of life. And they're even more ignorant of my place of birth in South America. I could interpret this to mean that NZers are not the most informed people in the world, but I do realize this phenomenon occurs nearly everywhere. I will admit, however, that a place that isolated might engender odd ideas about the outside world, but it is not unique, and might very well vary by degree and (in my case)degree of anti-Americanism. This all makes homesickness worse, though, doesn't it? |

Hi
Still homesick after 3 years, but I can now buy British foods etc at Safeway's, but do we have to be in the ETHNIC part of the supermarket? |

As for homesickness, that can actually get worse after a few years, once the novelty has worn off... Anyway, hope you like it here! :) |
