Homesick....

Quoting myself... But I wanted to check things hadn't changed (dramatically) since I left.
Stokes Croft (best place to live according to above link) is about a mile or so from this...
"Stapleton Road, Bristol
Why is it dodgy? The People newspaper named this terrifying road in Bristol’s Easton district ‘Junkie Street’, while its locals dub it ‘Crackhead Alley’ — both aren’t far off the mark. The statistics speak for themselves; 915 crimes in seven months and an average of four stabbings, muggings, burglaries or thefts everyday. A cesspit of moral decay, this stretch of syringe-littered tarmac is run by killers, drug addicts, hookers and pimps – while its law-abiding residents peak nervously from behind lace curtains. The M32 road runs directly though Stapleton Road, meaning dodgy deals can be conducted all too easily. If you’re lucky enough to make it from one end to the other, do yourself a favour and don’t come back. "
So I guess things haven't changed much after all.

In the city closest to my home the "country club" part of town is just a short walk from relatively cheap older housing, much of it in a poor state of repair. When I lived in London I noticed that just north of Shepherd's Bush you could go from the swanky terraced mansions of Holland Park to 1960's era high-rise council flats and a car-breakers yard in the space of half a mile. ..... They filmed an episode of The Sweeney in that immediate area.

But that's true of most cities, that you can move from "nice" areas to ones that are, er, not so nice, and not just in the UK, though being a small and crowded country it does seem to be more true there.

Fred Baker('s) Cycles is where all my childhood bikes came from.
I google street viewed, as I was feeling homesick, and noticed the City Center Sauna is still there. When I was a kid, that's were bullies said they got a happy ending from your Mum! City Road was where they said she worked after the massage place closed.

I'm heading back to the vicinity in August!

This is so off topic, but I can't resist mentioning the Anti-Tesco Riots of 2011.

Remember the Black and White café? Always a good place to score according to the locals 'cos it was a no-go for the local cops. The ones who spent their time sitting at the end of the street in a transit van with shopping cart welded over the windows.
Yeah... Lovely place. :P
++ Fred Bakers.
