Help Guys - Renting with a dog!!!

Re: Help Guys - Renting with a dog!!!
The reason we bought a Doberman was because we'd had an attempted break-in during the night when my husband was away. My first step was to speak to my vet and ask his advice on the best breed/age etc of the dog. He told me only to buy one from a reputable breeder who only breeds one type of dog. Don't buy a dog if you cannot see the mother...you should be able to pet her without her showing any signs of aggression. Ideally you should be able to see the sire.
The dog's owner should be capable of handling the dog...some breeds are extremely assertive...the dog has to learn the owner is pack leader. The dog should be trained properly...and socialised. It should also have the correct amount of exercise for the breed.
Most of the stories I've read about dog attacks are dogs from unsuitable homes.

The wife and I rescued a Foxhound 8 years ago and brought him with us when we bought our home. Before then, we rented a condo and only had to pay $25 a month pet fee [for possible carpet damage], no insurance required. In our new house, our neighbour runs a daycare just over the road from us in her house. She was fine with the Foxhound but was not happy when we rescued a pure bred pitbull [4 months old]
She knows us and trusts us with our dogs so we gradually changed that prejudice about the breed.

I understand your point, but my situation is unusual.

Just thought I would update you guys. The rental that said it would accept the dog and was fine with the fact he was a rotti, but wanted an insurance policy to cover him, we now have another problem. The first insurance company which insure Rottweilers now can't provide us with a policy because of a lack of a Social Security number. What is it they say - one step forward, 4 steps back. The stress levels are now at breaking point and am just waiting on the next set back. Anybody got a tent handy!!!!

If we had other children visiting we would always make sure the dogs were locked away safely. Mainly because I was worried that the dog may knock a child over and it would be misread by the parents.

More in-line with this post and IMHO, if you love your dog/s you will take them with you. They are part of your family right? I actually started volunteering at an animal shelter and it's sad to see the number of dogs that have been dropped off there...
You have to do what's right for you and surely you can find somewhere that will allow you to have your dog/s?
Good Luck

Thanks for that. You are right, he is part of the family but can't believe it is this hard to find somewhere to take him with us. Will keep you posted if, and when, we get an insurance. By the way, we also have had another house say that if he's kept in the garage and kitchen, we don't need insurance for him. Yet again, I haven't told her what breed he is!!! We'll wait and see

Yippee!!!!!
Have managed to find a rental where there is no restrictions or insurance required for our rottweiler Buster. Hopefully the documentation we have provided the realtor will be sufficient for the credit check and we will have agreement on a lease for a year.
Thanks for all the good advice and support. It helps a lot. Thanks British Expats

Re: Help Guys - Renting with a dog!!!
The term "Rescue" has many interpretations. I know the full history of the dog. My wife is friends with the breeder. I don't agree with breeding dogs, favoring rescuing where possible. This dog was sold and then returned to the breeder after 1 day [long story and not pertinent]. When the breeder had a new litter of puppies due she was going to send the pit bull to the pound [I don't agree with it, but I understand it as they are in the "business" of breeding/selling dogs, not keeping them as pets].

Yeah! Glad you found somewhere for Buster!
We're having a similar problem, not with the breeds because they are all lil'ens... but as soon as you tell people you have 4 dogs they don't want to know! (2 Chihuahuas, a Chinese Crested and a Boston Terrier) Even got turned away by a website that claimed to be specifically for finding dog friendly rentals! Seems that more than 2 dogs is a big no-no. Starting to panic a little bit now; going over for a scouting trip asap after my visa interview. There is the option to buy if we get really stuck, but I'd much rather rent for a while beforehand to get a better idea of the city (Austin.)
Oh btw, for any doggie lovers reading this you might like some of the designs in the Dog Lovers section of my Zazzle store. Shameless plug I know, but we do have some cute rottie designs so its kind of relevant
