Default Help with getting a Driver's License

Hi,
While you are waiting for an F-1 approval, and have B-2 status, how
can you get a driver's license?! A friend of mine is extremely
paralyzed and says there's no way of doing this, because he needs a
Social Security number. Is this true??

Don't visitor's get to drive here?? His country is not on the list of
the Department of Motor Vehicles list of countries which allows you to
drive in the US.

Thanks

Most countries can drive in the US as long as they are visitors on their
own license (and maybe supported with an IDP)

But, no, as a B-2 he won't be able to get a DL, SSN or not. DLs can be
obtained without SSNs ... if you're entitled otherwise to a license.

If his country is not part of the driving treaty, then it is up to the
state how to treat his license. It is also up to them to determine
whether he is permitted to drive or a foreign license as a visitor, or
if he is a state resident. State residency doesn't always may or may not
be related to INS status.
